NASCAR betting has been in hibernation for the better part of three months and the natives that bet on NASCAR are getting restless. One of the most interesting and amusing wagering pastimes you’ll ever find, NASCAR has one of the most loyal fan bases in all of sports betting. And after almost 100 days without a NASCAR gig to whet their whistles the start of the 2009 and upcoming Shelby 427 race cannot come soon enough.
NASCAR season kicks off on February 15th with the Daytona 500, but shortly thereafter the circuit moves out west for the Shelby 427 event held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. This bet on NASCAR event dates all the back to 1998. However, as NASCAR fans are likely to know, this is the first year that the NASCAR event has been run under the title of the ‘Shelby 427’. In a year where the economy is in collapse and NASCAR events are scrambling for sponsors, Carol Shelby generously agreed to put the cash so fans could continue to look forward to bet on NASCAR racing in Las Vegas.
On the track, there’s plenty of intrigue leading up to this Vegas-based NASCAR event. The track is a rare ‘D’ shaped oval super speedway with 20 degree banking which allows for a very fast race, but also just enough curve to create some interesting things for the fans that bet on NASCAR. Well prepared teams with the fastest cars usually separate themselves from the rest of the pack here, unlike other short track events where luck and crashes allow slower cars to hang with the leaders.
Two drivers have dominated this NASCAR event over the past few years. Not surprisingly three-time NASCAR champ Jimmie Johnson won the event three straight times between 2005 and 2007. Matt Kenseth has also fared well winning the NASCAR betting event in back to back years in 2003 and 04.
However, last year Carl Edwards crossed the finish line first and claimed his first NASCAR title in the event. Watch for Johnson and Edwards to battle again for the victory here, in race that could be very symbolic of the overall battle for the NASCAR title in 2009. Edwards and Johnson are the favorites for the bet on NASCAR driving title this season and the show down in the Shelby 427 should be a perfect battlefield for the two would be champs.
