Belmont odds on Peter Pan Stakes winner Charitable Man should be interesting on this year’s Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 6th. The Peter Pan has been a very good prep race for horses in recent years as they get ready for Belmont Stakes lines.
Belmont lines are likely to have Charitable Man as the third or fourth choice and that gives him very good value. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin has said this horse is among the best in the world and if not for an injury could be going for the Triple Crown instead of making the start in Belmont lines. Charitable Man has only raced four times, but he is unbeaten on dirt and two of those races were at Belmont Park. He won the Grade 2 Futurity Stakes last year at Belmont and the Peter Pan on May 9th as online sports betting results show. His only loss as online betting stats indicate was a seventh-place finish in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes on polytrack which his trainer said he did not like.
Belmont lines should give Charitable Man a good shot since his sire, Lemon Drop Kid won in Belmont Stakes lines back in 1999. “Being by Lemon Drop Kid, he should be able to get the mile and a half,” McLaughlin said. “He’s a top colt. We’ve always loved him. He has one blemish on his record and that was the [Polytrack] at Keeneland. He’s three-for-three on the dirt and he will run well on June 6.”
Fresh horses can do very well in Belmont lines. In fact, only two horses this decade, Afleet Alex and Point Given, have won in Belmont Stakes odds after running in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. McLaughlin won in Belmont Stakes odds in 2006 with Jazil who did not run in the Preakness after finishing fourth in the Derby. “It’s just hard on horses to run three times in 35 days,” McLaughlin said. “I don’t think that it’s such a specialist race, it’s hard on horses. The distance is an issue, but probably more of an issue is running three times in 35 days.”
There are a number of horses that ran in the Derby and skipped the Preakness that will be in this year’s Belmont odds including Mr. Hot Stuff, Chocolate Candy, Dunkirk, and Summer Bird. They will be challenging Charitable Man and Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird in Belmont odds. It is possible, but unclear, whether Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra will be in the Belmont odds field.
