The track was opened in 1959 as Latonia Race Course. Turfway Park is located in Florence, Kentucky – just 10 minutes south of Cincinnati, Ohio.
The track’s name was changed in 1987 and the track changed from a small track for cheap horses to a track with a major Kentucky Derby prep race, the Spiral Stakes. The track is home to the Kentucky Cup Day of Champions and includes four graded stakes including the Grade II Kentucky Cup Classic.
In 2005 Turfway Park became the first American track to go with the new Polytrack synthetic racing surface. This surface drains water quickly and prevents freezing. The track is now listed as “fast” no matter what the weather conditions.
