Kentucky Derby betting is always full of longshots that can make for a big score. One of those horses in 2009 Kentucky Derby odds is Mr. Hot Stuff. This horse has the pedigree to make some noise although many of the other factors are against him in Kentucky Derby.
Kentucky Derby odds show that Mr. Hot Stuff is going to go off at Kentucky Derby odds of at least 20-1 and possibly as high as 40-1. The reason the Kentucky Derby odds are so high is that Mr. Hot Stuff has only one maiden win to his credit. Kentucky Derby betting could be interesting on this horse though if the horse is focused. Not many people question the pedigree of the horse for Kentucky Derby betting, but they question his head and they question some of the other factors including his trainer and his jockey.
Mr. Hot Stuff is the brother to last year’s Kentucky Derby entrant, Colonel John who won the Travers Stakes. Mr. Hot Stuff has a sire in Tiznow who is a Hall of Fame horse and ran at a distance. Tiznow was Horse of the Year in 2000.
While Mr. Hot Stuff may have the pedigree to win in Kentucky Derby he doesn’t have much else. His trainer Eoin Harty does not have a resume to win in Kentucky Derby odds. The horse needed five tries to win his first race. He was dominated by The Pamplemousse in the Sham Stakes and he finished third in the Santa Anita Derby, well beaten.
Mr. Hot Stuff gets John Velazquez in the irons and while that looks like it positive in Kentucky Derby, it may not be. Last year Velazquez notched his 4,000th career victory. The problem with backing Velazquez in Kentucky Derby betting is that he has had 10 mounts with his best finish being a second on Invisible Ink in 2001.
Is pedigree enough to overcome all of the negatives surrounding Mr. Hot Stuff in Kentucky Derby betting? In most years the answer would be no and it probably will be no again in 2009 even though there is no overwhelming favorite in Kentucky Derby odds.
Take a look at the Kentucky Derby odds on Mr. Hot Stuff and decide if he can somehow hit the board for a big score on Saturday.
