The Marlins are one of two MLB teams, alongside the White Sox, actively trying to lose. It is, once again, rebuild time in Miami. And so, the Fish, under new president of baseball operations Peter Bendix, is trading away any veteran player worth his salt. First baseman Jake Burger and starting pitcher Jesús Luzardo were both shipped off this winter in deals for prospects. Acquiring 1B Matt Mervis from the Cubs is a nice buy-low add. But for the most part, Miami’s sportsbook moves are focused on being good about four years from now.
Former Los Angeles Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough is the new manager of the Marlins. Certainly, he is in for quite a culture shock going from the richest team in the game to one of the poorest.
Second baseman Otto Lopez was claimed off waivers from the Giants on April 4. Lopez became one of the Majors’ best defensive second basemen with 17 outs above average (most in the National League, minimum 850 innings) and nine DRS (second most). But the Marlins also need offense, so the 26-year-old Lopez will need to produce more.
First baseman Matt Mervis was acquired from the Cubs in a trade and is a change-of-scenery candidate. The former top prospect dominated Minor League competition but couldn’t find his footing or consistent playing time at the MLB level (.481 OPS in 36 games).
Namely, Nick Fortes is the incumbent catcher who finished with five defensive runs saved and improved his OPS (.466 to .737 OPS) from the first to the second half.

Offensively, Miami ranked 27th for runs scored, 14th for batting average, 25th for OPS, 26th for home runs, and 12th for stolen bases.
