2005 Season Summary

The Wyoming Cowboys finished the 2004-05 season with a record of 15-13 straight up, including a Mountain West Conference record of 7-8, which was good for a fifth place finish in the league.

Wyoming finished in the black, though barely, with a record of 13-11-1 against the college basketball gambling lines. The Cowboys finished strong, however, with nine payoffs in their final thirteen games after getting payoffs in just four of their first twelve games.

Wyoming has never been mistaken for a true basketball power or school and their 2004-05 season was about as good as it gets. The Cowboys had few prospects for any significant success as they entered the 2005-06 campaign and were expected to have another middle of the road season. There was the possibility, however, that they might be decent board bargains since they are one of the least followed teams in college hoops.

Stumbled out of the gate

Wyoming opened the 2005-06 season with a 69-54 home win over Alabama State as 19.5-point overlays. That was then followed by a 59-62 home overtime loss to NC-Wilmington as 1.5-point chalks as the Cowboys stumbled out of the gate.

After an 87-78 home win over Charlotte as 4-point dogs, Wyoming then scored an unlined home win over Northern Colorado 83-70. But from there the Cowboys were back in the tank starting with an ugly 47-63 loss at Washington State as 10.5-point dogs. That was then followed by a 53-57 home win over Southern Illinois as 2-point chalks. After a 105-67 unlined home win over Colorado Springs, the Cowboys went on to lose at Princeton 50-59 as 2-point dogs as they were bleeding red ink at the start of the year with a mark of 1-5 against the spread.

More of the same

Wyoming offered gamblers a brief break from the misery starting with an 80-67 neutral court win over Montana State as 2.5-point chalks. That was then followed by a 75-69 home win over Southern Methodist as 5.5-point chalks.

But from there, it was more of the same starting with a 69-84 home loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee as 2-point dogs. Next came a 58-48 home win over Weber State as 11-point chalks. That was followed by a 64-69 loss at Denver and then a 77-88 home loss to UNLV in the Mountain West Conference opener as 1-point dogs for a fourth straight failure against the board and ninth loss in twelve games overall against the spread as Wyoming was quickly establishing themselves as a “go against” team.

Brief bargains

The lack of cash turned the college basketball betting masses against Wyoming. As is so often the case, this made Wyoming most valuable as a value-added team beginning with a 68-64 win at Texas Christian as 3.5-point dogs. That was followed by a 55-50 home win over Air Force as 4-point dogs and then a 77-70 home win over New Mexico as 3-point chalks.

After a 67-80 loss at Brigham Young as 8.5-point dogs, the Cowboys resumed as brief bargains with a 72-67 win at Colorado State as 8.5-point dogs and then followed that up with a 77-78 overtime home loss to San Diego State as 1.5-point dogs.

Red ink resumed

Wyoming was unable to sustain profits and success, however, starting with a 63-71 home loss to Utah as 3.5-point chalks. That was then followed by a 54-66 loss at UNLV as 11-point dogs. Next came as 67-65 home win over Texas Christian as 8.5-point overlays for a third straight failure ATS. Wyoming then scored back to back loss/covers at Air Force and at New Mexico.

The bleeding then resumed starting with a 68-74 home loss to Brigham Young as 2-point chalks. That was followed by a 78-80 home loss to Colorado State as 2.5-point overlays. Next was a 72-91 loss at San Diego State as 11-point dogs and then a 70-79 loss at Utah as 6.5-point dogs. Wyoming then went on to go 2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS in the MWC tourney as bargain values.
