Betting on College Basketball Sweet 16 Action on Tigers vs. Spartans

LSU Tigers vs. Michigan State Spartans

At the beginning of the NCAA Tournament LSU was written off for dead.  Head coach Will Wade was suspended two weeks ago because of the FBI bribe investigation tapes.  As a result, gamblers wanted nothing to do with the Bayou Bengals.  But the regular season champions of the Southeastern Conference have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen.  Michigan State opened as a 6.5-point betting on college basketball chalk to LSU.  More than a few gamblers are giving the Tigers a good hard look.  Of course, the Spartans are experienced at Sweet Sixteen berths.  Head coach Tom Izzo has cache with gamblers.

LSU Tigers

LSU opened NCAA Tournament action with a 79-74 win over Yale as 6.5 point betting on college basketball overlays.  Following that was a 69-67 victory against Maryland as three-point chalks.  Even though the Tigers have not gotten the money they have surprisingly stayed alive for interim head coach Tony Benford.  Prior to Wade’s suspension Benford was a top LSU assistant.  To begin with offense is the bedrock of the Tigers.  LSU ranked 24th in the nation for scoring offense.  Balanced against that is a defense ranked 217th for points allowed.

Michigan State Spartans

At the onset of the Big Dance Michigan State scored a 76-65 win over Bradley as 17.5-point overlays.  Next was a powerful 70-50 payout over Minnesota as 10-point favorites.  Tom Izzo’s Spartan team is among the most complete in the tournament.  Certainly, few teams can play a more effective full court game.  MSU ranks 46th in the country for scoring offense and 34th for points allowed.  It follows that Michigan State was Big Ten regular season and tournament champion.  Most important of all is that Sparty gets the cash with consistency.

Stats to Consider

In particular Michigan State has been a sports betting cash cow this season.  Sparty has covered the spread in 25 out of 36 games.  Concurrently MSU is in good form with six payouts in their last nine games.  Three of their last four matchups have gone over the total.  Of great concern is MSU’s record of two covers in their last eight March Madness matchups.

Team vs. Team

In the same way LSU has gotten the money in just two of their last eight NCAA Tournament games.  Although the Tigers lost only 14 out of 34 games vs. the odds this year, they have failed to cover three in a row.  Counter to that is the fact that LSU has covered five in a row as an away dog.

Matchup to Watch

In this situation Michigan State has a major advantage with the best player on the court.  Cassius Winston was named Big Ten Player of the Year.  To illuminate Winston averaged 18.9 points and 7.6 assists per game.  LSU has nothing to counter Winston’s Betting on college basketball presence.  Furthermore, the Spartans are the much more complete team.
