At the beginning, rookie Duke head coach Job Scheyer is off to a solid start. But high-profile College Basketball odds losses to the Kansas Jayhawks, Purdue Boilermakers, and Wake Forest Demon Deacons have gamblers questioning their long-term March Madness viability. Scheyer was a Duke player and assistant and knew the program better than any outsider. Also, that means he knows of the impossible to meet the expectations of Duke fans. And a Final Four berth last year adds to the pressure.

2022-23 Duke Blue Devils Team Analysis
First, Duke has a new men’s basketball coach, you know, in case you hadn’t heard. The transition from legendary Mike Krzyzewski to Jon Scheyer is obvious. Hence, the prevailing storyline surrounding the Blue Devils. Yet it’s not the only NCAABB betting factor worth discussing. For the first time since the Carter administration, someone not named Mike Krzyzewski occupies the top chair on the Duke bench.
Namely, Jon Scheyer is a former national title-winning player and assistant. And he takes the reins after being named the head coach in waiting in June 2021. Scheyer is expected to tweak the offense and bring a fresh perspective to the job. Albeit one shaped by 13 years within the program. Accordingly, he can recruit. Scheyer brought in the likes of Jayson Tatum and Paolo Banchero. Also, he landed this season’s top-rated class. But when it comes to motivation, in-game decisions, and player development, he is unproven.
In coach Mike Krzyzewski’s retirement tour, expectations were sky-high with a very talented roster. A trip to the Final Four marks the 2021-2022 season as a success. But the context surrounding that achievement for the Blue Devils will always be considered.
Certainly, the unexpected loss in Coach K’s final game at Cameron to hated rival North Carolina was a stinger. And the Tar Heels would eventually double down on spoiling the farewell tour. It felt like fate when a rematch was miraculously set up in the tournament. However, UNC gutted out another victory.
The key catalyst for Duke is Jeremy Roach. His teammates and coaches voted the 6-2 floor general as Duke’s lone captain. To illuminate, Roach has grown as a vocal leader. And his clutch displays during the NCAA Tournament saved the Blue Devils. As a sophomore, Roach averaged 8.6 points on 41% from the field and 32.2% from the arch, along with 3.2 assists. For Duke to be a true national title contender, the junior version of Roach must be one of the best point guards in America.
