2022-23 Gonzaga Bulldogs Team Analysis
Once upon a time, the Gonzaga Bulldogs were the loveable underdog of the NCAA Tournament. This tiny and obscure Jesuit Catholic university, hidden in Spokane, Washington, became a favorite of squares and sharps. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Gonzaga earned fame for being a Giant Killer in the Big Dance.
Now in his 23rd season, coach Mark Few has transformed the Bulldogs have gone from a loveable underdog to a powerhouse. Gonzaga is no longer the cuddly teddy bear of the NCAA Tournament. They are a perennial top-tier NCAABB betting favorite. The Zags have made the NCAA national championship game twice since 2017 but lost both times. Since 2015 Gonzaga has had four Elite Eights and seven Sweet Sixteen berths.
Indeed, Mark Few has built a dynasty in Spokane that has been unstoppable in the regular season. And it has gotten even better in the last half-decade. The Bulldogs have been to the NCAA Tournament every season since 1999. And they will once again contend for the one thing they lack: a national championship. Gonzaga is 192-18 in its last six seasons and has not lost more than five games in a campaign since 2015-16. The Bulldogs have won at least 28 games in 10 straight seasons. Additionally, they made seven consecutive appearances in the Sweet 16. To go a step further, the Zags haven’t endured a season with double-digit losses in 11 years. Correlate the ridiculous numbers associated with this program go on and on. Now, as Gonzaga enters 2022-23, there’s no reason to believe the Bulldogs will slow down.
All-American Drew Timme is back for his senior season. Also, a pair of other starters, Julian Strawther and Rasir Bolton, look poised to take on even bigger roles. Reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year, Malachi Smith transferred into the program. In like manner, so did former LSU big man Efton Reid. Additionally, the Zags have several highly-touted recruits who will have a door open for them to step up. Gonzaga’s recent NCAA tournament success proves they are a top-tier national power. But their failure to win a national championship proves they benefit from playing in the weak WCC.
