2021 Michigan Wolverines Team Overview

At the onset, Harbaugh emerged as an expert Twitter Troll. Much to the annoyance of enemy fans and coaches. His southern football camps enraged the SEC. But those camps shook the SEC out of complacency. In his first two seasons, Harbaugh took college football by storm. To illuminate, Michigan was on the brink of a 2016 College Football Playoff berth. But a controversial overtime offshore betting loss at Ohio State shook Harbaugh to the core. Things have never been the same since that day.

Following the 2016 loss at Ohio State, Harbaugh seemed to withdraw. He stopped tweeting and boasting. At the same time, he lost much of his braggadocio. Recruiting began to slip, and the physical nature of his teams went soft. A sense of entitlement began to erode the Michigan foundation. Of great concern was heavy turnover of highly ranked recruits and respected assistant coaches.

Last year the roof caved in on Michigan and Harbaugh. Michigan finished 2-4 and was often rendered helpless on the field. Harbaugh fired respected defensive coordinator Don Brown. Yet he retained discredited offensive coordinator Josh Gattis. Gattis is seen as the true weak link on the staff. Subsequently, Harbaugh hired a younger coaching staff. His moves were seen as desperation. And a reaction to having lost the team in 2021.

Michigan Fan Base

Michigan’s fan base and administration have grown weary of Harbaugh. Following the 2020 season, he tried to find an NFL life raft. There were no takers. Thus, Harbaugh had to take a pay cut to remain at Michigan. Fans and gamblers’ blind adulation is long gone. Harbaugh is on the hot seat like everyone else.

Specifically, part of the problem at Michigan is its media hype machine. Many “journalists” got their degrees at Michigan and continue to gulp the Maize and Blue Kool-Aid. Michigan is annually proclaimed as a national championship contender. But the reality of Michigan is that they have one-half of a national championship since 1948.

Michigan boasts they are the winningest program in college football history. However, most of that success came before television was invented. Michigan’s high opinion of itself has hurt the program. Of great concern is that the Wolverines think their famous winged helmets and fight song will carry them to victory. One wonders if the lesson will ever be learned.

One of the big disappointments regarding Harbaugh has been the inability to find a legitimate quarterback. Last year Joe Milton and Cade McNamara were ineffective. Milton is gone, and McNamara will try to fend off transfer competition to win the full-time job.
