To be exact, on January 7, 2010, the Texas Longhorns’ run of dominance and glory ended. Nobody saw it at the time, but it was finished. Texas lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide 37-21 in the BCS national championship game. Following the College Football odds loss, Longhorn backers whined. Texas believed that had quarterback Colt McCoy not been knocked out early in the game, they would have won. More emphatically, that moment marked the beginning of Burnt Orange whining, alibiing, and complaining. Yet, it was assumed that Texas would be back. Except they weren’t.

2021 Texas Longhorns SBG Odds Overview
Now Steve Sarkisian arrives at Austin after serving as Nick Saban’s offensive coordinator at Alabama. He is tasked with turning Texas into Alabama. Fashion that offshore betting action shows a wait-and-see approach to the Longhorns.
2021 Texas Longhorns Team Overview
Following their championship game loss to Alabama, nobody saw the entitlement rot of Texas. Texas had become soft and whiny. They’ve never again come close to contending for a national title. Head coach Mack Brown was fired after the 2013 season. But Charlie Strong and then Tom Herman failed to move the needle.
When Herman led the Horns to a 10-4 record and a final national ranking of 9th in 2018, Texas was proclaimed “back.” However, Herman failed to keep it going, and the program regressed. Ironically, as this happened, Mack Brown was thriving in North Carolina. Accordingly, this indicated that the Texas program had far deeper problems than coaching.
Steve Sarkisian has previous head coaching experience with the Washington Huskies and USC Trojans. He enjoyed moderate success but was undone by substance abuse issues. He cleaned up his act under Nick Saban at Alabama. Saban was impressed with a dynamic and versatile offensive mind. “Sark” knows what it takes to win and takes over a Texas program that is considered one of the country’s great underachieving programs.
So far, Texas fans are all-in with Sark, who won rave reviews for building a competent coaching staff with gravitas. Players like the more straightforward approach by Sarkisian. Following years of the mental and fear tactics of his predecessor Tom Herman. Everyone is also excited about Sarkisian taking over the play-calling duties himself.
Sam Ehlinger’s Departure
Concurrently, Sarkisian must decide on a new starting quarterback after Sam Ehlinger’s departure to the NFL. Junior Casey Thompson is the favorite to win the job. Cameron Dicker, “The Kicker,” returns after consecutive seasons as All-Big 12 placekicker. Meanwhile, on defense, there is plenty of front-line talent but perhaps not enough depth.
Specifically, on September 11, Texas goes back to the future with a game at ancient historical rival Arkansas. The Longhorns and Razorbacks used to fight it out for the old Southwest Conference championship in decades past.
Of course, the Red River Shootout is one of college football’s biggest annual games. Texas faces the Big 12 favorite Oklahoma Sooners at the Cotton Bowl on the Texas State Fairgrounds.
Back-to-back road games at the Baylor Bears on October 30 and at the Iowa State Cyclones on November 6 will be difficult. Consider that Iowa State is the second choice to win the Big 12 Conference after Oklahoma.
Jack Trice Stadium, home of the Cyclones, is where the dreams of Name Brand programs go to die.
