2024 Clemson Tigers Seek to Shock the Future Market

2024 Clemson Tigers Seek to Shock the Future Market

In 2020, the Clemson Tigers finished with a final national ranking of 3rd. It was the 6th consecutive season in which Clemson finished 4th or better. Since that COVID-ravaged College Football Betting season, Clemson has taken a step back. Dabo Swinney’s program has gone 10-3, 11-3, and 9-4 in the past three seasons. As a result of this decline, there have been some harsh comments about Swinney’s refusal to embrace the transfer portal and NIL fully. Swinney is an old-school coach who believes in education and building relationships.

2024 Clemson Tigers Preview

Swinney believes the real riches of college football are a lifelong brotherhood with teammates and coaches. So, too does he appreciate the ability to function as a contributing member of society. Those convictions, while admirable, are no longer relative to the current ways of college football. Now, it is all about the bag, at least in the eyes of most players. So, while Dabo has many fans who are pulling for his back-to-the-future ways, the jury remains out on whether it can work.

Five straight wins to end the 2023 season should give Clemson sportsbook confidence. But what is the Tigers’ ceiling? They have been an AP preseason top-10 team for the past three years. However, they finished no higher than No. 13 in the final poll during that span.

Still, Clemson is an upper-tier ACC team but has work to do to be a playoff contender. The season opener against Georgia may set the tone. In turn, the Tigers should be strong on defense once again. However, the development of the offense behind second-year coordinator Garrett Riley and quarterback Cade Klubnik will decide how high this team can climb.

Heading into 2023, quarterback Cade Klubnik was being floated as a dark horse Heisman Trophy candidate. That College Football Betting buzz quickly fizzled as the Tigers started 2-2. Subsequently, they finished with their worst record since 2011. Klubnik’s talent is undeniable, but he was far too up and down as a first-year starter. In sum, he posted a 19-9 touchdown-to-interception ratio and a No. 80 national ranking in QBR.

Highly regarded offensive coordinator Garrett Riley promised explosiveness. However, his unit rarely looked the part during his first year. To show, the Tigers ranked No. 50 nationally in total yards per game.

To reach an elite level, this group needs more consistency from Klubnik, more push from the offensive line, and more production from the wide receivers. Namely, Phil Mafah (965 yards, 13 TDs) will be one of the ACC’s best running backs. Also, tight end Jake Briningstool (498 receiving yards) is a future pro. Two new, highly touted WR recruits could provide a boost.

Wes Goodwin succeeded the legendary Brent Venables as defensive coordinator in 2022. Correlate that Clemson dazzled once again. They finished in the top 10 nationally in total defense and passing defense. Also, they tied for the national lead in turnovers forced (28).
