Arizona Wildcats Stun Oregon Ducks Again

This Thursday night, the No. 2 Oregon Ducks played the unranked Arizona Wildcats. Arizona upset the Ducks in a very exciting game in Eugene, Oregon in a Pac 12 conference game at the Autzen Stadium, Eugene, OR which was televised on ESPN TV.

The Ducks, who are now 4-1 (1st Pac 12 North) were upset by the Wildcats now 5-0 (1st Pac12 South) for the second straight season. The Ducks were favored at -24 points. Arizona RB Wilson a freshman, rushed for two touchdowns and had a reception from QB Solomon for another TD in the victory for the Wildcats and opening their 2014 season in Pac 12 with five consecutive wins, a first since back in 1968.

The turning point in the game came with 2:54 left in regulation time as RB Jones-Grigsby ran into the end zone for the tiebreaker and then the Wildcats held as they sacked Oregon’s QB Mariota and recovered his fumble. Then the Wildcats with the ball made a game clinching 1st down rushing as they ran out the clock in the 4th quarter, as a the stadium with its 100th consecutive sellout crowd became silent.

The statistics were very similar in the game with the Arizona Wildcats with 29 first downs for 495 total offensive yards, 287 passing and 208 rushing with 2 turnovers. The Oregon Ducks, meanwhile had 255 first downs with 446 total yards, 302 passing and 144 rushing with 2 turnovers.

The player statistics had the Wildcat QB Solomon completing 20 of 32 passes for 287 with 1 TD, and was intercepted twice. RB’s Jones-Grigsby & Wilson combined and 40 carries for 207 yards and 3 touchdowns while Receivers Jones-Grigsby and Jones combined for 7 receptions for 145 yards. The Duck’s QB Mariota completed 20 of 32 passes for 2 touchdowns, RB’s Freeman & Tyner combined had 131 yards rushing while Receivers Allen & Stanford combined for 9 receptions for 152 yards and 1 TD by Allen.

Late in the game as the Ducks were trailing 24-14 their kicker Wogan made a 21 yarder bring the score to 24-17 and on their next possession QB Mariota threw complete to receiver Lowe for a 9 yard TD with 8:20 left in the game and the game tied at 24-24.

The Ducks next kicked off to Arizona who started driving down the field, then the Ducks sacked QB Solomon, but Duck’s Washington called for conduct unsportsmanlike giving Arizona a 1st down. Then the Duck’s were called for pass interference which put the Wildcats closer, for RB Jones-Grigsby’s go ahead game winning TD.

The Arizona Wildcats 5-0 next play No. 16 USC 3-1 (1st Pac 12 South) at their Arizona Stadium on Saturday October 11th 2014. The Oregon Ducks 4-1 play the No. 8 UCLA Bruins 4-0 (1st Pac 12 South) in California and thus all four of these teams are competing for the Pac 12 Title in 2014.
