Clemson Poised for Strong 2022 Comeback Campaign

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has led Clemson to two College Football betting national championships, seven ACC titles, and four appearances in the national championship game. Last year Clemson stunned gamblers with a record of 10-3. The Tigers finished strong after a 2-2 start. However, Clemson was never a threat to the College Football Playoff. After four years of Trevor Lawrence at quarterback, the Tiger offense collapsed. Clemson had abysmal offensive metrics in 2021. By contrast, the Clemson defense saved the season. Now the question is where Clemson goes from there.

2022 Clemson Tigers SBG Odds Overview – Was 2021 The New Future?

Clemson remains a powerful brand on the board. Caused by a combination of the Tigers’ success and a weak Atlantic Coast Conference. Pitt was the 2021 ACC champion. However, the Panthers lost Heisman Trophy finalist Kenny Pickett to the NFL. That leaves a major void at quarterback for the Panthers. And nobody else in the ACC is ready to challenge Clemson for the title seriously.

Clemson Quarterback Quandary

The first among the questions for Clemson is if DJ Uiagalelei will keep the starting quarterback job. Consider that freshman phenom Cade Klubnik is expected to challenge for the number-1 job. Last year Uiagalelei was made the whipping boy for a lost season. However, that is not entirely fair. Clemson has not recruited well offensively in the past several classes. And it has begun to catch up with them.

Expectations were high for Uiagalelei coming into the 2021 season. Following impressive games against Boston College and Notre Dame as a freshman. However, he was inaccurate and made poor decisions too often last season.

Consider that Uiagalelei entered the year as one of the Heisman favorites but finished with more interceptions (10) than touchdown passes (nine). Further, he completed only 55.6 percent of his passes, ranking 98th in the country. As a team, Clemson’s passing offense was No. 103 nationally in yards per game.

While Uiagalelei had his share of struggles in 2021, the rest of the unit struggled too. The offensive line was inconsistent. In particular, they were useless early in the year. And the backs and receivers had a hard time staying healthy.

Tight end Davis Allen is a player to watch amongst the receivers. He could emerge as one of the top tight ends in the country. At wide receiver, Beaux Collins and Joseph Ngata are the top two. But Clemson has plenty of talent behind them, although it is unproven.

Clemson Tigers Conclusion

Of major concern is that there are new offensive and defensive coordinators for 2022. Brandon Streeter takes over as offensive coordinator, and Wes Goodwin is the new defensive coordinator. Clemson’s defense remains a key online wagering asset. But the offense needs a lot of work. Streeter could be the fresh mind that many fans believe Clemson needs.

First-year defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin has nationally elite talent all over the field to work with. Of course, everything starts with the defensive front. To show, Swinney believes that seven defensive linemen will be drafted next year.

Overall, Clemson ranked eighth nationally in total defense last season, allowing 310.2 yards per game. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Tigers post even better College Football Betting numbers this year.
