Perhaps the best and most interesting game of week one comes from New Orleans, Louisiana. The Caesars Superdome will serve as a virtual home game for the LSU Tigers as they face the Florida State Seminoles. Last week Florida State feasted on an FCS cupcake. The Noles scored a betting on College Football blowout over the Duquesne Dukes 47-7. But this week, the Seminoles will step way up in class. Of course, excitement is over the top for the LSU Tigers. Most important of all, FSU got a season-opening win for the first time since 2016.
Ward had 14 carries for 127 yards. Benson had 11 carries for 105 yards. And then Toafili added 13 carries for 101 yards. FSU amassed six rushing touchdowns. Ward had two TD runs. Also, Benson had a 41-yard TD. Benson is an Oregon transfer that frequently racked up yards after breaking tackles. Also, true freshman Rodney Hill added 55 rushing yards and a touchdown. The last time the Seminoles surpassed 400 rushing yards in a game was in 2016.
Florida State scored on eight of its first nine drives. Jordan Travis, Toafili, and Ward had TD runs as Florida State led 20-0 after the first quarter. Travis completed 11 of 15 passes for 207 yards. At the same time, Kentron Poitier had four receptions for 84 yards. Also, Mycah Pittman had four catches for 44 yards. In comparison, Johnny Wilson hauled in a 51-yard grab that set up a touchdown.
It was an important tone-setting win for FSU coach Mike Norvell. While his seat is not hot, it is warm. Especially with some Seminole fans pining for FSU alum Deion Sanders.
LSU Tigers Team Overview
Although the LSU Tigers have not been close to their 2019 level, they remain talented and dangerous. Former coach Ed Orgeron was respected for his recruiting despite his many flaws. And Brian Kelly was an effective recruiter at Notre Dame. Despite the academic restrictions being much more difficult than at LSU. Kelly may not win the SEC or national title this year. But he can build towards it. This year it is setting the tone and laying down the law for future success.
