Gamblers Believe Oregon is Lanning Up for 2023

Last year, new head coach Dan Lanning finished 9-3 before a bowl game loss to North Carolina. Lanning arrived from the national champion Georgia Bulldogs. While at Georgia, Lanning was the defensive coordinator and a top recruiter. Thus, he has many of the same College Football Betting credentials his predecessor, Mario Cristobal, had during his tenure. Lanning is set up for immediate success that he can build on. However, there is a dark cloud in the Oregon Ducks’ sky. Conference realignment is at the forefront of college football news.

2023 Oregon Ducks Preview

Next year, the Pac-12 Conference will lose the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins to the Big Ten. That is a body blow to a league already struggling to maintain credibility. Oregon, Washington, Stanford, Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, and Colorado are already talking to other leagues and exploring all options. Specifically, the Ducks want an invite to the Big Ten but may not get it. And the sportsbook issue will not be decided until Notre Dame decides its plans.

The conference realignment question could do potential harm to Oregon’s recruiting. Big Ten and SEC teams can point to Oregon no longer being in a superpower league. If the Pac-12 implodes, Oregon would be stuck in a potential merger with the Big 12 Conference. Or, worse yet, out on a limb. They say Oregon is a cinch for a promising future because of its Nike funding and College Football Betting national brand. So far, that has not panned out.

A couple of late-season losses to Washington and Oregon State cost Oregon a chance at the Pac-12 title. And a potential shot at the CFB Playoff. However, the Ducks are loaded for another run at both in 2023. Quarterback Bo Nix leads a high-powered offense. At the same time, the defense should take a step forward in coach Dan Lanning’s second year. Restocking the offensive line with four new starters is the team’s biggest question mark this fall.

Ducks were in the thick of the College Football Playoff race. Namely, Bo Nix was drawing Heisman Trophy buzz in 2022. But Nix suffered an ankle injury late in a November matchup with Washington. With Nix banged up, the Ducks squandered a lead to the Huskies by giving up 10 points in the final 3:07. And then Oregon also lost two weeks later to Oregon State. Nix opted to return to Oregon in 2023 to take another shot at a league title and CFP berth.

A 10-win season and Holiday Bowl victory in 2022 was good. But the expectation for the Ducks in recent years has become greatness. For fans, that starts with better results against rivals Washington and Oregon State. Also, it requires reaching the Pac-12 Championship Game.

The Ducks are not a traditional blue-blood power. Instead, they are a new brand with recent success. Since 1994, Oregon has had nine conference championships and two appearances in the national championship game.
