At the beginning of July, the college football world was thunderstruck. Pac-12 members UCLA and USC announced they were leaving for the Big Ten Conference in 2024. Nobody saw it coming. And with the announcement has come the chaos of the unknown. The remaining Pac-12 schools are scrambling for new homes. Thus far, none of them have found college football odds success in that endeavor. Oregon has been a Pac-12 power over the past two decades. UCLA and USC have paled in comparison. But the Ducks are the team that is not getting love from the Big Ten.

No Nike Knight in Shining Armour to the Rescue Yet
Of course, Oregon is known as “Nike U.” Oregon Ducks alum Phil Knight has funded the Ducks’ sportsbook transformation into a national brand. Knight has given the University of Oregon a blank check. In turn, the O has been a perennial contender in the Pac-12 and national levels. With all that money and success, Oregon was thought to be a lock to get into the Big Ten. But they are not.
Concurrently the Big Ten is waiting on Notre Dame to decide its path. And that won’t happen until the SEC and Big Ten fill out their rosters. All of which puts Oregon in limbo.
Of great concern is the negative recruiting that could blow up on the Ducks. Enemy schools can say that Oregon is being shut out of the two best leagues. And that the leftover Pac-12 and Big 12 are second rate. Despite the power of the Nike brand and its NIL power, recruits won’t commit to Oregon until a league commits to the program.
Lanning Up
At the beginning of all this pressure and tumult is the arrival of new head coach Dan Lanning. Lanning inherits a full cupboard from previous head coach Mario Cristobal. Previously Lanning was the Georgia defensive coordinator. He was on the staff when the Bulldogs beat the College football betting odds for the national championship.
First on the to-do list for Lanning is to sort out the new starting quarterback. Lanning has familiarity with Bo Nix. Cause by Nix being an Auburn transfer this past offseason. Nix was a starter at Auburn but faced challenges because of inconsistent play. Also competing for the top QB spot are former five star recruit Ty Thompson and redshirt freshman Jay Butterfield. The starter will not be named until close to the season opener.
Oregon has the power of a strong brand and a record of success. Additionally, gamblers have more faith in the Ducks than any other Pac-12 team. Although the future is uncertain, the Ducks are loaded for the 2022 campaign. Oregon believes that a great season can help find them a new league in the future.
