Iowa Needs To Overcome Plodding Nepotist Offense for 2023 Success

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz took over the program in 1999 and has a career record of 186-115. Overall, Ferentz has won two Big Ten championships at Iowa, but the last one was in 2004. And that is becoming an increasing point of College Football Betting frustration for Iowa fans. Ferentz’s son Brian is the so-called offensive coordinator. The plodding Iowa offense has become a source of ridicule and jokes for the past few years. It was so bad in 2022 that it was assumed the son would resign under fire or be reassigned.

2023 Iowa Hawkeyes Preview

Hawkeyes fans and gamblers have no online betting for Brian Ferentz. Yet he returns, much to the angst of Hawkeyes fans. Iowa is a tough and fundamentally sound football program. But it is not an athletic one. Therefore, the Hawkeyes have a ceiling as far as what is possible. That is usually a mid-tier bowl game and an occasional upset of a superior foe. But nothing more. Hence the boiling anger of the Iowa faithful.

If Hawkeyes can jumpstart an offense that averaged only 18.7 points a game in Big Ten play last year, the West Division title is possible. Despite the loss of linebacker Jack Campbell and standout cornerback Riley Moss, the Hawkeyes will rank among the Big Ten’s best on defense.

Michigan transfer Cade McNamara should be an upgrade at quarterback. Also, Ferentz dipped into the portal for College Football Betting help along the offensive line and at receiver. Those additions provide optimism that Iowa should be more productive on offense in ’23.

It is true that Iowa can be offensively challenged. And the O might be painful to watch at times. Still, the defense and the program’s overall style of play continue to work. For all the pain caused by Iowa making America watch that offense, the team was one upset loss against Nebraska away from playing for the Big Ten championship. Correlate Iowa hit the eight-win mark for the seventh time in eight seasons. The theory is that the program can continue to do just fine with more offensive talent.

Last year, Iowa got annihilated by Ohio State 54-10. But the defense allowed 13 points or fewer in ten of 13 games. That’s not supposed to happen in 2023. This year’s defense is going to be every bit as nasty. Accordingly, Iowa has become a factory for guys who like to tackle and take the ball away, which is a plus for defensive football players. And this time, more will come from the other side to hold up its end of the bargain. Even with the problems on offense, a strong case could be made for Iowa to win the West Division for the second time in three years. McNamara might only have to be average to lift Iowa to another level. Especially if the defense and special teams can come close to matching what they did in 2022.
