Iowa State Cyclones Turn the Page for 2022

Following a letdown 2021 campaign, head coach Matt Campbell enters his seventh season at Iowa State Cyclones in rebuild mode. But the ISU faithful believe Iowa State has young players ready to replenish the roster. Campbell is a three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year. In sum, he has led Iowa State to bowl games in five of his six seasons in Ames. He is the most successful coach in program history. Cause by the bleak program history, a period of losing wouldn’t be much of a surprise. But Campbell’s college football odds record says otherwise.

Iowa State Cyclones SBG Odds Overview

Negative expectations are not what Campbell or his program have in mind for 2022. At the onset of 2022 is the offshore betting concern that Iowa State will lose star quarterback Brock Purdy. Iowa State did not look to the transfer market at quarterback in the offseason. Cause by their faith in Purdy’s understudy, former four-star recruit Hunter Dekkers.

Dekkers saw some meaningful playing time during his redshirt freshman campaign. And that experience will help put him in a good spot mentally for 2022. Dekkers has had time to mature behind the best quarterback in Iowa State history. Correlate that Dekkers has a stronger arm than Purdy and will also be a threat with his legs.

Equally important is the challenge of replacing running back Breece Hall. Junior Jirehl Brock will try and fill the large shoes of the All-American. In fact, Brock came in with Hall in the same recruiting class and was actually the higher-ranked prospect.

The tight end and wide receiver positions could be the most interesting developments. Of great concern is that ISU lost two of the best tight ends to ever play there in Charlie Kolar and Chase Allen. Two-time first-team All-Big 12 receiver Xavier Hutchinson is back. Also returning is promising sophomore Jaylin Noel and a host of other veteran wideouts.

Iowa State Cyclones Conclusion

The offense is loaded with talent and experience. Correlate ISU has a bigger arm at quarterback. Thus, the Cyclones could have a more prolific College football betting odds attack in 2022.

It has been the defense that has been the foundation of the Campbell era at Iowa State. In like manner to the offense, Iowa State has plenty of talent to replace in 2022. One strength is the return of Will McDonald IV back for another go-round on the edge. McDonald is Iowa State’s all-time career sacks leader and one of the top edge rushers in college football. Since 2020, McDonald’s 22 sacks are second-most nationally.

New names will make up the rest of the three-man front. But Iowa State believes it is reloading. Isaiah Lee will start and fight multiple blockers in the middle. At the same time, Blake Peterson has many reps and earned his spot. He should be the man opposite McDonald.

A Mixed Expectation for 2022 – SBG Odds Prediction

Of course, the 2021 campaign may have been a little bit of a letdown for the fans in Ames. But the good news for Iowa State is that a 7–5 season can now be considered disappointing. Not long ago, that was unthinkable. So far, Campbell is enjoying the challenge of reloading his roster and preparing for a new attack on the Big 12 Conference.
