2024 Kansas State Wildcats Preview

Of great concern is that Kansas State went through an unexpected coaching transition. Offensive coordinator Collin Klein’s departure led it. Klein took the same sports betting position and a lot more money at Texas A&M.

Klein’s defection was a particularly bitter College Football Betting pill to swallow for Wildcat fans. Cause of his status as a 2012 Heisman Trophy finalist. Also, Kyle Klein was the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner. And he was a second-team All-American that same year. Most important of all, Klein led K-State to the 2012 Big 12 Championship as its QB hero and the 2022 Big 12 title as the offensive coordinator.

Klein’s 14-year connection to the program caused a difficult separation that tested the faith of Kansas State players. Yet Avery Johnson stayed.

Johnson said the relationships he has built with teammates and coaches and the K-State culture were the ultimate difference. The native of Wichita and product of Maize High School has deep ties to the state and KSU. He wasted no time making an immediate impact on the program. Despite playing behind starter Will Howard in 2023, Avery Johnson made the most of his playing time. His 142.0 QBR and 5.7 yards per rush were better than Howard’s. Also, Johnson flashed more gamebreaker potential than Howard, who was the more accurate passer.

Howard hit the portal after the regular season, giving Johnson his first collegiate start in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Against NC State, Johnson threw for 178 yards and two TDs. At the same time, Johnson rushed for another score to reinforce the faith that he was the right man for the future.

The Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns left the Big 12 for the SEC. At the same time, the Utah Utes, Colorado Buffaloes, Arizona Wildcats, and Arizona State Sun Devils will arrive as replacements. The new Big 12 roster could be the most exciting league of the Power Four. And it’s a league the Wildcats can win.

In sum, Kansas State boasts a sophomore who is arguably the best quarterback in the league. Not to mention a coach who has emerged as one of the best in the land. Indeed, this could be the Year of the Cat in the 2024 Big 12 championship chase. And with that a birth in the expanded College Football Playoff!
