Kansas State Seeks to Defend Big 12 Title in 2023

Specifically, in college football coaching, the term “fit” rates with “culture” as one of the most overused words in the dictionary. But Kansas State Wildcats head coach Chris Klieman perfectly fits in Manhattan. K-State athletic director Gene Taylor had previously worked with Klieman. And Klieman had tremendous success at the FCS level with North Dakota State. But there is always a College Football Betting stigma about hiring an FCS coach to the FBS level. Taylor took the chance because he knew Klieman and saw his work first-hand. Last year Taylor’s gamble paid off with a Big 12 championship.

2023 Kansas State Wildcats Preview

Kansas State is coming off the program’s best season under coach Chris Klieman. Yet another run at the conference title isn’t out of the question with quarterback Will Howard leading the way in 2023. The Wildcats must replace standout running back Deuce Vaughn. And KSU must reload a secondary that the Big 12’s high-powered offenses will test.

As for the Kansas State offshore bookmaker schedule, not playing Oklahoma last year would’ve been negative for Kansas State. But for 2023, the Sooners should be a whole lot stronger. Thus, it’s good for them to be off the schedule. And then then there are the new Big 12 Conference programs. BYU and Cincinnati are missing from the 2023 schedule as both are rebuilding. While not playing West Virginia hurts. The defending Big 12 champs catch a nice Big 12 break and get hit with one bad one.

K-State only has to play four conferences’ College Football Betting road games. And one of them is against Kansas. On the other hand, the Wildcats are one of the few Big 12 teams that have to deal with back-to-back road trips. Making things worse, they have to play four road games in six weeks. Including trips against Texas and Oklahoma State. The schedule is quietly dangerous. Troy isn’t going to be an easy out in Week 2. And then going to Missouri could be a trap.

The reigning Big 12 champs won’t have dynamic running back Deuce Vaughn in 2023. But the development of quarterback Will Howard and five returning starters along the offensive line should keep the K-State offense performing at a high level. Although Vaughn’s big-play ability won’t be easy to replicate, Florida State transfer Treshaun Ward and DJ Giddens should be an effective one-two punch on the ground.

Head coach Chris Klieman’s defense held opponents to 21.9 points per game last fall. However, this unit lost its best pass rusher in Felix Anudike-Uzomah. Also, replacing six key defensive backs in the offensive-minded Big 12 is never easy.
In November 1988, the Kansas State Wildcats finished their second consecutive winless season. Sports Illustrated labeled Kansas State as the worst program in college football. In turn, many observers said the program should be shut down. There was no hope for a program with the worst record in college football history. Following that lost season, K-State threw a Hail Mary. The Wildcats hired Iowa offensive coordinator Bill Snyder to save the program. Not only did Snyder save the K-State football program, but he also built a sustained national power.
