The National running back Watson of Division II Azusa Pacific had a 2 yard score and RB Fugate also has a short TD run in the game, the only 2 touchdowns for the game. The only other score was a FG for 3 points in the 2nd quarter. RB Watson finished the game with 55 rushing yards, a game high, and was chosen as the Most Valuable Player of the bowl game.
Statistically, the National team had some 17 first downs for 303 total offensive yards, with 114 passing on 10 of 23 pass attempts, and 189 rushing on 37 carries, with no turnovers and possessed the ball for 35:44 minutes of the game. The American squad had only 9-1st down for 184 total yards, with 103 passing on 17 of 28 passing attempts, and 81 yards rushing on 18 carries with 1 fumble lost and had ball possession for only 24:16 minutes of the 60 minute game Collegiate Bowl.
On the National team RB Agnew of Southern Illinois carried the ball on 8 occasions for 53 total yards. RB Fugate of Eastern Kentucky as mention earlier had a TD run of 1 yard and QB Bridge from Southern Alabama had 3 of 5 passing completions for some 51 total yards. The National team’s defensive unit held the American offense to a total of 178 yards in the game and with just 9-1st downs.
Offensively for the American squad their QB Stoudt of Clemson completed some 7 of his 8 passes for 48 yards in leading his team’s offense. RB Murphy of Missouri rushed on 3 carries for a total of 47 yards.
The National team received the opening kickoff and after 12 plays and 80 yards, with a little luck, as QB Showers of UTEP lateraled the Ball to RB Watson on the 2 yard line, the exchange was fumbled, but Watson was able to recover the ball and take it into the end zone for the 1st score of the game. Then in the 2nd quarter with just 3:16 to go before half-time, the National squad brought the score to 10-0 with a 33 yard FG by kicker Detmer of Toledo.
In the second half of the game, on the opening possession with the American team with the ball, the National team defense stopped the American team and they were forced to punt, and after receiving the punt, the National team offense was able to move down the field on 7 offensive plays for 64 yards, and they finished the drive with the 1 yard TD run by Fugate.
