NC State Wolfpack Faces Fork in the 2022 Road Season

The North Carolina State Wolfpack football program remains an unfulfilled expectation. At least in the eyes of its passionate fan base. Fans see the program as more than it actually is or ever was. NC State has never won a national championship. Further, the Wolfpack has only one double-digit win season in its history (11 wins in 2002). Since 2003 NC State has finished in the national rankings only three times. Last year the Pack went 9-3 and scored a landmark college football odds win over the Clemson Tigers.

A History of Plateaus for NC State

NC State has only one top-10 finish in its history. Correlate in 1974, head coach Lou Holtz led the Wolfpack to a 9-3-1 season and a final ranking of 9th in the country. Holtz owns the best winning percentage of any coach in NC State history at .719. Of great concern is that NC State has not won the ACC championship since 1979.

2022 NC State Wolfpack – SBG Odds Overview

Head coach Dave Doeren enters his 10th sports betting season at NC State. At the onset of his head coaching career, Doeren made an impact at Northern Illinois. To illustrate, he went 11-3 and 12-1. Doeren’s 2012 team made the Orange Bowl, an unprecedented accomplishment for a Mid-American Conference team.

Subsequently, Doeren parlayed that success into the head coaching gig at NC State. A great 2022 season ended in disappointment. Cause by a canceled bowl game that was to be held in San Diego against the UCLA Bruins.

Dave Doeren was a curious College football betting odds hire for the Wolfpack. He had no ties to the southeastern United States as a man from the Midwest. During his time in Raleigh, Doeren has been on and off the hot seat. In particular, three consecutive ACC records of 3-5 from 2014 through 2016 nearly got him fired. And the 4-8 season of 2019 put Wolfpack fans at the breaking point. But the 2021 campaign was Doren’s best since arriving in 2013.

Doeren’s teams often frustrate NC State fans for following up big wins with inexplicable losses. But much of that is based more on the program’s limits than on the coach. North Carolina is a good recruiting area. However, offsetting that is heavy competition within the state and throughout the southeast.

NC State Wolfpack Conclusion

Problematic for any NC State coach is a fanbase that believes the program should be an ACC power. Yet nothing in the program’s history indicates such success is possible or could be sustained. Now expectations are sky-high for NC State. Cause by numerous seniors taking advantage of the extra COVID year. Also, a favorable schedule for 2022 could help generate and sustain success.

The non-conference slate features a date at East Carolina and home games vs. Charleston Southern, Texas Tech, and UConn. Accordingly, each is a favorable matchup. The ACC slate includes trips to Clemson and North Carolina. But the Wolfpack gets nemesis Wake Forest at home.

Most important of all is the return of Devin Leary at quarterback. Under offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tim Beck, Leary eliminated turnovers and became a winner. In sum, Leary was 283-of-431 passing for 3,433 yards, with 35 touchdowns and only five interceptions last year.
