On Thursday night, the No. 11 UCLA Bruins routed the No. 15 Arizona State Sun Devils 62-27 at Sun Devils Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. This was a game that was expected to be close, as UCLA was favored at -3.5 with the Ov/Un at 59.5. The actual total of the game was 89.
A key to the UCLA win was two long runs by RB Adams that both resulted in touchdowns. The first was a 95 yard return of an interception just before half time for a TD, the 2nd a 100 yard kickoff return for a TD in the 3rd quarter. Amazingly the Bruins scored four TD of 80 or more yards and their QB Hundley passed for some 355 yards.
In the game the Bruins now 4-0 and 1-0 Pac 12 had a total of 582 yards offense in the game with 5 plays over 80 yards and scored more points than before in history of the Sun Devils Stadium. QB Hundley, who was returning from arm injury, was all over the field making 1st downs as completed 18 of 23 passes which included an 80 yard TD pass to receiver Payton in the second half. In the 2nd and 3rd quarters in a span of less than 7 minutes the Bruins scored 28 points.
The Arizona State Sun Devils (3-1 and 1-1 Pac12) a had an incredible 105 offensive plays and gained 626 yards against the UCLA Bruins defense, which was the Bruins downside in the game. The Arizona QB starter Kelly was injured, so backup QB Bercovici started the game and was demonstrating flashes of excellence as he passed for 488 yards a 3 touchdowns and in his first start set a school record of 42 completions in 48 passing attempts. But his other side came out also as he was intercepted twice and lost the ball once on a fumble which UCLA turned into a TD. Thus, this game after winning the first three games of the season was an ugly loss.
Last season the Bruins lost to the Sun Devils and in that game Hundley was sacked a total of nine times, but in this 2014 game he played like a leap frog, all over the field and ran himself for 72 yards in the game and 1 TD.
In the first quarter the Arizona scored a TD and FG for 10 points while UCLA scored 2 TG for 6 points. In the 2nd quarterArizona scored a TD for 7 points and UCLA scored 3 touchdowns for 21 points.
