Texas A&M Aggies Yell for Title in 2022

Texas A&M Aggies Yell for Title in 2022

There are two ways to look at head coach Jimbo Fisher’s college football odds tenure at Texas A&M. One train of thought is that Fisher has not come close to living up to expectations. And that he is at the same level as his predecessor Kevin Sumlin. Counter to that is the long view that Fisher is recruiting at a record level and will soon have a roster stocked for a serious national championship run. Or perhaps it is both. In turn, fans and gamblers are out of patience.

Aggies History is That of a Wannabe

It is forgotten that the Texas A&M Aggies have three claimed national championships. However, the last one was in 1939. For a program with unlimited resources funded by proud mega-rich donors, it has been a source of frustration and embarrassment. In sum, the Aggies have 18 conference titles. But their last one was in 1998 as members of the Big 12 Conference.

Texas A&M has always operated in the offshore betting shadow of the Texas Longhorns. In fact, the Aggies bolted the Big 12 for the SEC to get away from the oppressive Longhorns once and for all. But in the summer of 2021, Texas announced that it would rejoin the Aggies as members of the SEC. Although A&M officials were furious about the move, they had little choice in the matter.

Texas A&M has out-recruited Texas in recent years based on the SEC brand. Thus, the Aggies have a head start. But Texas A&M realizes the time has come to leap into the nation’s elite contenders. Since 1995, Texas A&M has had only two double-digit win seasons. The Aggies have ranked in the top ten only twice in the past 26 years.

2022 Texas A&M Aggies – SBG Odds Overview

Last year Fisher and the Aggies finished 8-4 and 4-4 in the SEC. On the positive, Texas A&M beat Alabama to make Fisher the first Nick Saban assistant to beat their mentor. But then came losses to the Arkansas Razorbacks, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Ole Miss Rebels, and LSU Tigers. All four of those teams were considered to be less than the Aggies.

Such inconsistent College football betting odds results are part of building a champion. But it is fair to say that most fans and donors believe Fisher should be further along after four seasons at the helm.

When Fisher arrived at College Station, donors presented him with a very expensive pair of boots. And a national championship trophy in anticipation of titles to come. Except none arrived as of yet. Two seasons ago, the Aggies beat every opponent but Alabama. Last season, they defeated the Crimson Tide. Next, the Aggies’ goal is to finish ahead of Alabama in the grueling SEC West Division race.

Receiver Ainias Smith, All-America defensive back Antonio Johnson, 2021 Freshman All-America offensive linemen Bryce Foster, and Reuben Fatheree II head a good nucleus of returning starters. Equally important is that Texas A&M gets a transfusion of elite talent from a recruiting class that experts consider the best.

Defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin led top-15 units at Florida in 2013 and 2014 and Michigan in 2015. Now he is charged to do the same at Texas A&M. Durkin has plenty of talent with which to work.
