Texas Talking Big for 2023

Texas Talking Big for 2023

It is true that the Texas Longhorns football program always thought of itself as more than it is. Certainly, Texas has the potential to win College Football Betting championships. The program prints money with its huge and mega-rich donor base. The state of Texas is one of the most fertile recruiting areas in the country. But with all of that going for them, Texas has rarely hit the mark. Indeed, Texas is the ultimate definition of an underachieving program. But to others, there is the sense that Texas is right where they belong.

2023 Texas Longhorns Preview

History shows that Longhorns rarely measures up to its massive online betting ego. In 2021, Steve Sarkisian took over with great fanfare. But the roof caved in on him with a disappointing 5-7 season. That paled compared to his processor, Tom Herman, going 7-3 in 2020 with an Alamo Bowl win. And then, in 2022, Sark went 8-5 after a bowl loss to the Washington Huskies.

Sarkisian is feeling the College Football Betting flames on his butt before the season has started. Texas did improve defensively last year after having one of the worst defenses in the nation. Of great concern is that the Sarkisian offense was lackluster. His reputation as an offensive mastermind was built with Alabama talent.

To some gamblers, Tom Hermann looked a lot better than the day he was fired. Herman turned in four consecutive winning seasons and bowl wins. Also, he led Texas to a final top-ten national ranking in 2018. That was the only such season in nine years.

Yet, with all that bad news, Texas and Sarkisian may have started turning the corner. Arch Manning, the most coveted quarterback in the country, has signed with the Longhorns. As a result, that is opening the floodgates for more 5-star recruits.

Texas hasn’t met preseason expectations recently. But coach Steve Sarkisian’s squad is poised to be the favorite in the Big 12 for 2023. The Longhorns return 15 starters. Including quarterback Quinn Ewers, one of the nation’s top offensive lines, and receiving corps. The defense showed improvement in ’22 and should continue that progression this fall.

The program’s momentum has been surging. Especially in recruiting, since a 5-7 season in Sarkisian’s first year in 2021. The Longhorns will be a favorite to win the Big 12 with so much returning experience.

Following a loss in the 2009 national championship game to the Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas rapidly declined. And they have never been close to reaching that level. A sense of entitlement took over the program. In fact, Texas began being derided as the “tea sippers.”

Loonghorns dominated the Big 12 Conference board room, which led to that sense of entitlement. Further, ESPN gave the Longhorns their own network. And the Big 12 caved to almost all of the Longhorns’ demands. Yet this situation caused karma that damaged the program and removed its hard edge.
