2023 UCLA Bruins Preview
Following his failure in the NFL, Kelly had other job offers. Including the Florida Gators. Buyt Kelly preferred the UCLA job and the anonymity of working in Los Angeles. Thus, progress has been systematic. Kelly’s first offshore betting year was a 3-9 season. Next came records of 4-8, 3-4, 8-4, and 9-4 last year. Kelly signed an extension to stay at UCLA, who likes his steady climb.
UCLA is moving to the Big Ten Conference in 2024. The move was necessary for superior revenue streams and TV contracts. In turn, UCLA will be a travel partner with the crosstown rival USC Trojans. But their College Football Betting completeness for the more physical Big Ten is being questioned.
It is true that UCLA is coming off its best season under coach Chip Kelly. But exceeding that win total will require new stars to emerge at quarterback and running back. Following the departure of Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Zach Charbonnet.
A five-star freshman, Dante Moore, and a transfer, Carson Steele, from Ball State, could fill those voids. At the same time, the defense brings back eight starters. But new coordinator D’Anton Lynn has to get this unit on track after it allowed 29 points a game last year.
A slew of fresh faces are set to take over major roles across the offense. Of major concern is the absence of quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson. He was the school’s all-time leader in total offense (12,522 yards) and a 48-game starter.
The UCLA coaching staff will not tip its hand until the opener starts. But the widely held belief is that it will be five-star true freshman Dante Moore’s gig sooner or later. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder was a recruiting coup with tremendous upside. Yet the competition under center could extend through the team’s non-conference slate.
Once upon a time, the UCLA Bruins were a national power in college football. This basketball school became known as a perennial Pac-12 title contender and top-10 team. From 1965 through 1998, UCLA finished in the national top 20 a total of 20 times. And that included ten top-10 finishes. Since then, the going has been much tougher.
