And that is part of what makes Auburn tradition so special with the college football odds. But this past offseason was a Civil War Eagle. A Free Fall from Soaring Start
At the onset of his tenure, Bryan Harsin was an outsider from Boise State. Harsin had zero connections to Auburn or the southeastern United States. But that was sold as an offshore betting asset when he arrived. Auburn is known for its warring factions. And a donor class that meddles and interferes with the football program. Once upon a time, these donors were caught on an airfield trying to get then-coach Tommy Tuberville fired. And Tuberville was a winner! That is the Tiger Den that Harsin unknowingly walked into.
Bryan Harsin got off to a promising start in his Auburn tenure. In fact, War Eagle won six of its first eight games. Harsin got high marks for a program that showed polish. Compared to predecessor Gus Malzahn, Harsin seemed to be a cool customer that was highly organized. And then the roof caved in.
Auburn lost their final five games of the season. Correlate the heartbreaking loss to Alabama in the Iron Bowl. Auburn needed to run out the clock but failed to do so. Then their defense couldn’t stop a last-gasp Alabama drive from its own goal line that sent the game into overtime. Alabama stole the Iron Bowl 24-22. And then, at that moment, Harsin’s honeymoon ended. The coup de grace was a 17-13 loss to Houston in the bowl game.
Following the collapse, Harsin’s coaching staff continued what was already an alarming rate of turnover. Of major concern was a mediocre recruiting class that was nowhere near the level of the top SEC teams. Thus, the donors went after Harsin’s job when he was on vacation. But their story of lies made Harsin a sympathetic figure, and he survived the coup. But he lost all of his credibility in the process.
Storm Clouds on the Horizon
Auburn starting quarterback Bo Nix has departed after two seasons as the starter. Nix is the son of a well-connected Auburn player. It is true that Nix was not an effective starter. However, appearances are everything at Auburn. Harsin faces a College football betting odds season on the brink. And with less of a roster than he had last year.
