Iowa Hawkeyes Team Overview

Last game, the Iowa Hawkeyes lost 35-7 against the Ohio State Buckeyes as 17-point road dogs. The game went under the total of 46. Iowa has a record of 3-2 straight up, 2-3 against the spread, and 4-1 over/under the total. Iowa ranks 90th for total offense, 127th for passing, 12th for rushing, and 86th for scoring. Defensively, they rank 25th overall, 65th against the pass, 15th against the rush, and 37th for points allowed. Also, Iowa ranks 49th for fewest turnovers lost and 37th for takeaways.

Namely, Cade McNamara got off to a decent start in the affair. He led a couple of solid drives and made some nice throws. However, he missed a couple of big plays in the first half, and none of Iowa’s possessions resulted in points when he was on the field.

In sum, McNamara went 14-for-20, which is good. But he only threw for 98 yards, which isn’t. It marked the fifth time he has finished with under 100 yards passing in 10 career starts for the Hawkeyes. Of great concern was that most of McNamara’s completions were on very short throws. Additionally, some of the throws on which he connected were rather shaky. It may be time for Kirk Ferentz to consider going to Brendan Sullivan.

Ohio State quarterback Will Howard carved up Iowa’s secondary even more than he did Akron’s. Consider that the Hawkeyes allowed Howard to go 21-for-25 with 209 yards and four touchdowns. They did pick him off once late in the first half. But that was Howard’s only mistake. Certainly, he deserves credit for playing well. And the Buckeyes have an incredible receiving lineup. But Iowa prides itself on defense.

Overall, against Ohio State, Howard constantly assaulted Iowa. In turn, Iowa never found an answer.
