Western Michigan vs. BYU Potato Bowl Betting on College Football Preview

Potato Bowl. Western Michigan Broncos vs. BYU Cougars

At the beginning BYU is a rather large betting on college football Bowl favorite against Western Michigan.  While that is the case there are many gamblers that will give Western Michigan a good hard look.  Indeed, BYU did not finish the season strong.  Counter to that was the Western Michigan rally to win at the end for a bowl berth.  Additionally, the BYU Cougars offense is worrisome to say the least.  And laying double digits with such an anemic attack will have gamblers questioning the merits of that decision.  But Western Michigan’s defense could leave openings.

Western Michigan Broncos

Western Michigan closed the season well with a 28-21 win and payout over Northern Illinois to save a bowl berth.  As a result, the Broncos have a betting on college football record of 7-5 straight up, 5-8 vs. the odds, and 7-5 over the total.  The win over NIU was especially meaningful as the Huskies are Mid-American Conference champions.  Additionally, it snapped a three-game losing streak for WMU that put their bowl hopes in doubt.  Western’s offense is an asset that ranked 29th best in the nation.  Counter to that is a defense that ranked 103rd for points allowed.

BYU Cougars

BYU brings an offshore betting Record of 6-6 both straight up and with the line and 3-9 under the total.  Following a 24-21 win at Wisconsin the Cougars had high hopes for a breakout year.  However, a lack of offense held BYU down at the end.  To show the Cougars ranked 108th in the country for total offense.  Contrarily the BYU defense was strong and ranked 18th in the nation.  To differentiate this program used to be known for its prolific passing attacks.  Yet offense has gone from the BYU staple into a liability.

Stats to Consider

BYU has been a better than expected road favorite despite their straight up mediocrity.  As an example, the Cougars have paid in six of their last eight laying points on the road.  Eight of their last 10 in that situation have gone under the total.  Counter to that is Western Michigan’s record of success as a road dog.  To show the Broncos have covered 13 of their last 18 getting points away from home.  Three of their last four in that place have gone under the total.

Matchup to Watch

Certainly, Western Michigan has a matchup advantage with running back LeVante Bellamy.  Indeed, Bellamy ran for 1172 yards, 6.2 yards per carry with six touchdowns.  Jamauri Bogan is an additional betting on college football asset for WMU.  Bogan scored 15 rushing touchdowns for the Broncos.  In the same way BYU’s lack of weaponry makes for a matchup liability.
