2021 NFL New Head Coaches & Betting Odds Analysis

New head coaches always generate excitement and optimism for the franchises that they take over. At the onset of their tenures, the sky is blue, and the dreams are unlimited. But it doesn’t take long for reality to set in. In most cases, new head coaches take their jobs because the previous guy failed with the NFL odds. That means that there are rarely quick fixes. Legendary Hall of Famers such as Bill Walsh, Tom Landry, Bill Parcells, and Bill Belichick struggled early in their careers before finally cracking the code.

2021 NFL New Head Coach Analysis

Brandon Staley – Los Angeles Chargers

A strong case can be made that Brandon Staley inherits a ready-to-win franchise. At the beginning is quarterback Justin Herbert. As a rookie in 2020, Herbert quickly became a key sports betting asset. Additionally, Staley is a defensive mastermind. This is a coaching upgrade that could have an immediate impact.

Urban Meyer – Jacksonville Jaguars

Urban Meyer and rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence make for one of the most interesting storylines in sports. Of great concern is Meyer’s admitted inability to deal with losing. How can he handle multiple losses in an NFL season if he couldn’t handle one or two losses per year in college football?

Nick Sirianni – Philadelphia Eagles

Last year owner Jeff Lurie fired Super Bowl-winning coach Doug Pederson. It was an admission that the Eagles Super Bowl window had closed. Nick Sirianni steps into one of the most toxic front offices situations in sports.

Dan Campbell – Detroit Lions

In view of the arrival of Jared Goff as the new quarterback, the Lions have a rebuilding look. Dan Campbell is the latest man to walk into Detroit’s coaching graveyard. Lions’ history does not indicate Campbell has much of a chance for success. Also factoring is the Ford Family’s ownership that has failed to move the needle for nearly 60 years.

Arthur Smith – Atlanta Falcons

Specifically, Arthur Smith inherits an aging roster led by veteran quarterback Matt Ryan. Defensively the Falcons remain a mess. Ownership wants to win now. However, the reality is that Smith will be doing well if he can produce modest improvement.

Robert Saleh – New York Jets

Owner Woody Johnson is back after serving as former President Donald Trump’s United Kingdom ambassador. As bad as the Jets were under Woody, they were even worse when he was away. Now Robert Saleh inherits a raw rookie quarterback in Zach Wilson and a tradition of losing. Saleh was a respected defensive coordinator with the 49ers before taking the Jets’ job. Perhaps he can find a way.

David Culley – Houston Texans

On the whole, David Culley inherits the worst situation in football. Culley has worked his whole life to get an NFL head coaching gig. Now in his 60s, Culley faces the prospect of his starting quarterback, Deshaun Watson, being suspended or worse. Of major concern is that Houston’s roster is gutted and the least capable in the NFL.
