2025 Buffalo Bills NFL Draft Team Preview
The Buffalo Bills keep getting close. But at some point, that makes the Josh Allen era even more frustrating. Last season, Allen won his first MVP. But his stellar online wagering play still hasn’t resulted in the Bills’ first Super Bowl appearance since the 1993 season. The franchise is still chasing its first Super Bowl win.
One of the oft-cited reasons that Allen was the correct MVP choice was that he had a worse team around him than Lamar Jackson. Thus, perhaps it’s time for the Bills to fix that if it’s true.
The Bills were good enough to go 13-4 and make the AFC title game last season. However, they have high-profile playoff losses to the Chiefs and Bengals in recent seasons and have to figure out how to go to the next level. It won’t be easy, as the team will have to clear a lot of salary-cap space just to get under the projected cap for 2025.
One notable move they made before the official start of free agency was a slight adjustment to Allen’s contract. And “slight” means a record-setting $330 million six-year extension that will pay a guaranteed $250 million.
Also, the team handed out 2025 NFL futures extensions to wide receiver Khalil Shakir, defensive end Gregory Rousseau, and linebacker Terrell Bernard. If the Bills can’t make the Super Bowl with Allen as quarterback, it will feel like a big failure.
In sum, Buffalo’s top three needs: CB, DT, and WR. There’s an argument for a wide receiver to be even higher on this list. But the biggest need is undeniably at outside cornerback. The only move in free agency has come in bringing back Dane Jackson. He is a good addition after spending last season with the Panthers. However, a clearer starter opposite Christian Benford is still missing.
More overall depth is also needed, even with Benford signing a four-year, $76 million extension Saturday. The Bills have repeatedly shown a desire to extend their own, but looking to the future, here is important.
Buffalo Bills 2025 NFL Draft Summary
Running back could be a need if the Bills aren’t willing to meet James Cook’s asking price. It might not be a good sign for Cook that he’s still waiting for a new contract. And that was after the team prioritized extensions for Terrel Bernard, Greg Rousseau, and Khalil Shakir.
Also, it’s unknown whether the team views wide receiver as a need. Thus, it could hinge on how confident it is in Keon Coleman making improvements in his second season. But they likely won’t reach for a wide receiver after adding depth with the signing of Joshua Palmer. As for Joey Bosa, he can’t just be an insurance plan.
