This past Monday night, NFL week 10 saw the Philadelphia Eagles then 6-2 (now 1st NFC East) beating the Carolina Panthers, then 3-5 (now 2nd NFC South) 45-21. The game was played at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA. Let’s take a close look at the game.
The Eagles had to star performance in the game from QB Mark Sanchez who threw 2 touchdowns, and RB Darren Sproles who rushed for 2 touchdowns, and their defense dominated the Panthers as they sacked Panthers QB Newton some 9 times.
The offensive leaders in the game for the Panthers were QB Newton who completed 25 of 40 passes for 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, while be sacked 9 times for a loss of 91 yards. RBs Stewart & Williams combine for 24 carries for 67 yards with Stewart scoring 1 TD. Receivers Olsen & Benjamin combined for 9 receptions for 189 yards, with Benjamin scoring 2 touchdowns. The Panthers had 21 first downs with 81 total plays for 317 total yards, with 215 passing yards and 102 rushing yards with 3 interceptions, and 2 fumbles lost, while possessing the ball for 38:05 minutes of the game.
Leading the Eagles offensive charge were QB Sanchez who completed 20 of his 37 passes for 332 yards with 2 touchdowns, and was sacked 1 time for a 4 yard loss. RB’s McCoy & Polk combined for 17 carries for 30 yards with McCoy scoring 1 TD. Receivers Matthews & Celek combined for 12 receptions for 154 yards, with Matthews scoring 2 touchdowns. The Eagles had 17 first downs with 62 total plays for 365 total yards, with 328 passing yards and 37 rushing yards, with no turnovers. The Eagles possessed the ball for some 21:55 minutes of the game.
In this game the Panthers did not appear to be the same team that win the NFC South in 2013 and adding injury to misery, their DT Loutulelei was injured late in the game. On their 1st three plays from scrimmage QB Newton threw the 1st of his 3 interceptions and RB Williams lost a fumble that netted 10 points for the Eagles. The nine sacks on QB Newton were incredible, since he had never been sacked more than 7 times in a game in his career. The Panthers played catch up football for the whole game as at the end of the 1st quarter they trailed 17-7, then at half they trailed 31-7, at the end of 3rd quarter it was 38 -7, then finally in the 4th quarter the Eagles scored 7 points, and the Panthers 14 points, but it was too little to late as the Eagles won the game 45-21.
The Eagles scoring in the this game, curiously the innovative offense of Coach Kelly was 3rd best at scoring in this game, as first was the defense who forced turnovers and scored points, and then 2nd phase was the special teams punt return by RB Sproles for a TD. All this while the Panthers desperately needed a win to stay on track for the season, but that was not to be giving up 2 early turnovers, that they never were able to recover from.
