On the whole the Eagles 2017 world championship was considered by many to be an accident. Philadelphia’s 2018 bet on NFL results validated that. Although the Eagles made the playoffs they were never taken seriously. As was the case in 2017 starting quarterback Carson Wentz was out with injury. Nick Foles was good enough to ensure a post season berth. But there the similarities ended. New Orleans scored a 20-14 home win over Philly in the NFC Divisional playoffs. Specifically, the honeymoon is over in the City of Brotherly Love. Eagle fans want another title.

Farewell to a Champion
It would be difficult to find a more unique NFL career than the one of Nick Foles. At the onset of his career he was a third-round draft pick of the Eagles. He departed for two seasons only to return to the Philadelphia fold. Accordingly, the plan was that he would back up Carson Wentz. Yet it was Foles filling in for the injured Wentz that engineered the biggest Eagles win ever. Philadelphia scored a bet on NFL upset over New England to end up as surprise Super Bowl Champions. Foles has departed again this time to Jacksonville.
No More Controversy?
Despite quarterbacking the only Eagles Super Bowl title in history Foles began 2018 on the bench. Carson Wentz returned as starting quarterback. Concurrently any mistake Wentz made was blown out of proportion. Fans would scream for the man that quarterbacked the championship. Even if Wentz was actually better. Certainly, this put a strain on Philadelphia’s offshore bookmaker prospects last year. Encompassing that was a record of 9-7 straight up but 7-9 against the spread. Wentz has posted quarterback ratings over 100 the past two seasons. Further he tossed 54 touchdown passes and only 14 interceptions.
Help Wanted
Of great concern to Eagles fans was a ground attack ranked 28th in the NFL. Lack of production there led to a strain on the quarterbacks and defense. As a result, Philadelphia moved to address the problem. Penn State running back Miles Sanders was drafted in the second round. Last year Sanders ran for 1274 yards and nine touchdowns. He averaged 5.8 yards per carry. Top draft choice Andre Dillard of Washington is an offensive tackle that could be a staple for a decade or more.
Doug’s Dilemma
Head coach Doug Pederson was acclaimed for delivering Philadelphia’s first and only Lombardi Trophy. Nonetheless he now must pray that the injury prone Wentz can stay healthy all season. After all, Foles is no longer present to save the day. Of course, Philadelphia’s draft helped address the issue. More rushing yards means less abuse that Wentz will have to take.
Matchup to Watch
On the whole the Eagles have a bet on NFL Matchup advantage of a weak division. The NFC East is highly winnable. By reason of that the two keys to the season are related. Improved rushing production and the health of Wentz.
