Certainly, Matt Patricia has gotten his “Welcome to the NFL” as Detroit’s head coach. The Lions have lost both of their games and Patricia has often looked out of his element. Correlate the belief that his New England pedigree would turn into Betting on NFL success for the Lions. And now Patricia’s old mentor, Bill Belichick, and the Patriots will come calling Sunday night. This was not the pupil vs. student matchup that Patricia dreamed of. New England Patriots
New England is coming off a 31-20 loss at revenge minded Jacksonville last week. As a result, their betting on NFL record is 1-1 both straight up and against the spread. Granted, the Patriots were ambushed and fell behind 24-3 midway through the third quarter. Most of all they still played poorly knowing they would enter a hostile environment. Jacksonville quarterback Blake Bortles lit up the Pats for 377 yards and four touchdowns. Additionally, the Patriots were outgained badly by a margin of 481-302. Of great concern to Detroit is that such a bad performance is unlikely to be repeated.
Detroit Lions
Detroit did get the money in 27-30 loss at San Francisco as six-point dogs. In fact, the Lions snuck through the back door after falling behind 30-13 in the fourth quarter. While the Lions lost they actually outgained the 49ers 427-346. Matt Stafford recovered from a bad week one game to perform well. To illuminate Stafford threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns. But much of that was put up during “garbage time” with the game out of reach. To begin with the Lions are nowhere near as good as they expected to be with Patricia. Following that he has shown all of the rookie mistakes of a new head coach. Beyond that the Lions have never been consistent in the modern era.
Numbers to Consider
New England has been a strong online wagering value as a road chalk. To demonstrate the Patriots have covered 11 of their last 15 in that role. And eight of their last 12 as road chalks have gone under the total. Counter to that are the Lions surprisingly good numbers as home dogs. Concurrently Detroit has covered eight of their last 12 in that situation. Four of their last five getting points at home have gone over the total.
Team vs. Team
Head to head the Patriots have paid in six of their last eight against Detroit. As well as the last two meetings. And three of the last five between these teams went over the total. Additionally, at Detroit New England has covered their last two visits.
Matchup to Watch
It follows that this is a bad Betting on NFL spot for the Lions. As mentioned earlier New England couldn’t have played worse last week. In turn they should be much better in the Sunday Night spotlight.
