In the 1995-96 season, the Dallas Cowboys made history. However, they didn’t know it. Dallas won its third Super Bowl championship in four seasons. Additionally, it was the fifth Super Bowl title in franchise history. Nobody knew then that they would never beat the NFL odds for a sixth ring. The man responsible for building that 1990s Dallas Dynasty was Jimmy Johnson. Due to an ego clash with owner Jerry Jones, Johnson departed in the spring of 1994. Since then, Jones has tried to prove he is a football man with futility.

McCarthy Takes Charge for Last Kick at the Can
Kellen Moore called plays into Prescott’s helmet as the offensive coordinator for four online betting seasons. Now it’s an all-new program for Prescott. These days Moore is the offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers. And coach Mike McCarthy is the Cowboys’ play caller. McCarthy has had to adjust to calling plays again. Since his head-coaching tenure ended with the Green Bay Packers late in the 2018 season, McCarthy has not called plays.
McCarthy and new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer retooled the Cowboys’ offense during the offseason. In turn, Schottenheimer said the offense was not broken. The Cowboys finished fourth in scoring and 11th in yards per game. Yet Moore, quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier, offensive line coach Joe Philbin, and running backs coach Skip Peete were not retained.
Just as McCarthy did in 2020, when he took over as head coach and left the offense in place, McCarthy has adapted. To illuminate, he uses the phraseology of his West Coast scheme to what Prescott has known since his rookie year, 2016.
Specifically, the subtleties of how a play is run might be different. Consider an all-out-breaking route that was once strictly performed at a precise angle and can be rounded off. In like manner, Prescott might have been asked to make a certain read high to low. Now it is low to high.
He and Prescott spent plenty of time together in McCarthy’s first three years. But not nearly the same time as a quarterback and play caller meet. This offseason has been about delving into the reasons for the scheme changes. Due to NFL rules, hours are limited for meetings. But Prescott says he understands the NFL betting odds importance of knowing McCarthy’s philosophy as much as he did Moore’s.
Last time Mike McCarthy called plays, he had banked 11 years of experience with Aaron Rodgers. He knew what the quarterback preferred. In a similar way, Rodgers knew what McCarthy liked. While much was made of how it ended between McCarthy and Rodgers in Green Bay, they had seven seasons with at least ten wins. Additionally, McCarthy and Rodgers won five NFC North titles. Also, they made it to three NFC Championships Games and won a Super Bowl.
McCarthy and Prescott won’t have the same hands-on experience in 2023. Thus, McCarthy understands time is a luxury. McCarthy said minicamp would be important to the rapport he and Prescott establish. Especially since the Cowboys will have full team drills for the first time. That figures to grow when the Cowboys attend a training camp in Oxnard, California.
