The Kansas City Chiefs are long shots in NFL preseason betting to win the Super Bowl at odds of 125-1 but they are just 10-1 to win the AFC West.
The Chiefs could be vastly improved this season and they may start to show it when they open up the preseason in Atlanta on August 13th. The Chiefs will be underdogs in NFL preseason odds in that opener and they could be worth a wager.NFL preseason betting on the Chiefs continues in Week 2 as they are in Tampa Bay. The Chiefs final two preseason games are at home as they host Philadelphia and Green Bay. The Chiefs have been really bad the past three seasons going 10-38 but there is real optimism in Kansas City that things can change this season. The first year under new general manager Scott Pioli and head coach Todd Haley didn’t go well in 2009 but 2010 could be different.
The Chiefs are led on offense by Matt Cassel and running back Jamaal Charles. Last season the Chiefs couldn’t really get their offense untracked so they brought in Charlie Weis in the off-season to take over. They also brought in Romeo Crennel to handle the defense. The Chiefs added running back Thomas Jones in the off-season and he gives them a great option along with Charles in the backfield. In the draft they picked up Dexter McCluster who could be dangerous on third downs. They re-signed Chris Chambers in the off-season so they have a good receiving option. The offense for Kansas City definitely has potential.
The problem for Kansas City is the defense. They did get Eric Berry with the fifth overall pick and he will help but there are other problems. The Chiefs have not gotten much out of Glenn Dorsey or Tyson Jackson. Both players were high draft picks and have been disappointments so far. The linebackers for Kansas City are just average and the secondary is poor. It will be up to Berry to live up to his superstar potential if the defense is to be improved.
The AFC West is a division that everyone is handing to the Chargers in NFL preseason odds but San Diego has weaknesses. If things really come together for the Chiefs this season it is not out of the question for them to be a major surprise.
