New Look But Same Owner in Washington Commanders for 2022 NFL Season

Last year showed everyone why the Washington Commanders are dregs with the NFL odds. Formerly the Redskins and Football Team, Washington is the worst-run franchise in sports. Owner Dan Snyder’s reign of error included a 2021 collapsed stadium barrier. Of course, it was another losing season on the field. Head coach Ron Rivera has had to deal with serious health issues and a terrible boss in his two years at Washington. Indeed, the club plays hard for Rivera. But it is also a fact that the Commanders don’t have enough talent to be championship contenders.

Washington Commanders Mixed History

Founded in 1932 as the Boston Redskins, the franchise became the Washington Redskins in 1937. The Washington franchise has had great periods of glory and plenty of years of ineptitude. Washington was a perennial offshore bookmaker contender and 2-time NFL champion from 1936 through 1945. Then, from 1946 through 1970, the Redskins never made the playoffs.

But then head coach and general manager George Allen changed that with five playoff berths in six years from 1971 to 1976. Including a 1972 NFC championship. The late Allen made the Pro Football Hall of Fame based largely on his work in Washington. But the man that made the Redskins into Super Bowl champions was another Hall of Fame coach, Joe Gibbs. From 1982 through 1991, the Redskins won three Super Bowl titles with one other Super Bowl appearance.

Since Danny Boy Snyder took ownership of the franchise in 1999, Washington has posted just six playoff appearances. Their last four postseason bids were wild card losses. Washington hasn’t been close to being a bona fide Super Bowl contender during his reign of error.

In 2020 Snyder dropped the team nickname “Redskins.” Cause by a desperate sacrifice on the altar of political correctness. Following allegations of sexual harassment being a systemic issue in his organization. Only a putrid NFC East Division allowed Washington to slip into the 2020 playoffs.

Subsequently, Snyder has been accused of cheating his fellow NFL owners out of their FedEx Field gate receipts cut. With all the trouble Snyder has caused the league, one would think he would be a candidate for expulsion. Yet he is not, which leads to speculation about why that is. The Redskins changed their name to the Commanders in 2022.

2022 Washington Commanders – SBG Odds Overview – More of the Same?

Namely, Carson Wentz arrives from the Indianapolis Colts to take over as quarterback after one season. Wentz was the NFL betting odds scapegoat after failing to win the season’s final game at Jacksonville. That defeat cost the Colts a playoff berth. He was run out of Philadelphia on a rail two years ago. That checkered history will hardly move gamblers to plunk cash on Danny Boy’s Commanders.

Naturally, Washington does not bring much cache to the TV networks. Thus, they will get limited feature exposure in 2022. The Commanders are at the Chicago Bears in a Thursday night Prime Video game in week six. And then, in week ten comes an ESPN Monday Night Football game at the Philadelphia Eagles. There are two flex dates for the Commanders late in the season. But they are not likely to get bumped up to a feature game.
