NFL Week 7 Highlighted by Tua & Hurts Reunion

Week 7 begins with a Thursday night NFL odds matchup that features a rising power against a former one. The Jacksonville Jaguars are coming off a breakout season that ended in the AFC divisional playoff round. Then-second-year QB Trevor Lawrence responded to having an actual pro coach (Doug Marrone). Following his rookie season being wasted on Amateur Hour tyrant Urban Meyer. Now Marrone and Lawrence face the challenge of proving that the 2022 campaign was a portent of things to come instead of a fluke.

Week 7 Schedule Highlights

In comparison to Jacksonville, the New Orleans Saints are yesterday’s news. The unfortunate Dennis Allen took over as head coach when the legendary Sean Payton retired. Unlike Payton, Allen does not have Drew Brees. Instead, Allen has the newly arrived Derek Carr from the Las Vegas Raiders. Carr is not bad, but he is not Brees. Further, the New Orleans Supporting cast is not what Brees was surrounded with.

NBC Sunday Night Football offers a potentially fascinating sportsbook storyline. The Philadelphia Eagles host the Miami Dolphins. Of course, the matchup features a tale of two former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterbacks; Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa and Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts. Tua replaced Hurts as the starting QB in the second half of the January 2018 national championship game. Subsequently, Tua rallied the Tide to a comeback overtime win that ended with him tossing a TD bomb against the Georgia Bulldogs.

As a result of winning the national championship game in relief, Tua became a national sensation and the new permanent starter. But the Crimson Tide never won another title with Tua as the starter. And Hurts transferred to Oklahoma for the 2020 campaign. While at OU, Hurts made the final table for the Heisman Trophy award.

Tua was the more coveted pro, going in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. At the same time, Hurts was the 53rd player taken in that same draft. Hurts were derided as backup material, while Tua was touted as a future perennial All-Pro. Instead, Tua can’t stay healthy and misses more games than he plays. It got so bad that there was preseason talk of Tua retiring due to concussion issues.

Meanwhile, Hurts is making bank as the second-hottest NFL betting odds QB property to Patrick Mahomes. Hurts was an MVP contender in 2022 while leading the Eagles to a near-miss loss in the Super Bowl. He may go down as the greatest dual-threat QB of all time.
