Tennessee’s Titanic Winding History

Tennessee was founded in 1960 as the Houston Oilers, charter members of the American Football League. Subsequently, the Oilers moved to Tennessee due to stadium issues in 1997. In 1999 the Titans made their only Super Bowl, losing a heartbreaker to the St. Louis Rams.

During their time in Houston, the Oilers often enjoyed years of passionate fan support. However, there were other years when they were so bad that they were deservedly ignored.

Houston owner Bud Adams founded the franchise and presided over it until his death well after the Oilers had become the Titans. Correlate that Adams’s Oilers won the first AFL championship.

Houston’s Luv Ya Blue era of the late 1970s is remembered fondly by fans and gamblers. Those Oilers teams were powered by thundering running back Earl Campbell and matinee idol quarterback Dan Pastorini. However, the Oilers could never get past the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC.

The Titans have developed a rabid fan base in Tennessee with its share of offshore betting highs and lows. Tennessee has made the NFL Playoffs three straight years. But fans are still smarting from their 2021 AFC divisional playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Tennessee Titans Turn the Page for 2022

In the 2022 NFL Draft, the Titans chose Liberty quarterback Malik Willis. Willis was taken for his dual-threat playmaking ability. Of great concern was that Tannehill took a step back last season. Also, he was outclassed in the AFC divisional playoff NFL betting odds loss to Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals. Fans were enraged about a loss that was considered to be a sure win. And Tannehill was the scapegoat in the debacle.

Overall, the 2022 season opener against the New York Giants is potentially dangerous. The Giants will be playing hard in rookie head coach Brian Daboll’s first game. Tannehill will also face plenty of boos and cat calls at every mistake he makes. Next comes an even more difficult game at the Buffalo Bills in week two. Buffalo is the favorite to win the AFC championship. This ESPN Monday Night Football game is scheduled for September 19.

Tennessee makes its only NBC Sunday Night Football appearance at the Kansas City Chiefs in week nine on November 6. Of course, the Titans still have painful memories of their 2019 AFC Championship Game loss at Arrowhead. In week 11, the Titans are at the Green Bay Packers in a Thursday Prime Video Game on November 17. And then the Titans return to Prime Video for a Thursday night game at the Dallas Cowboys on December 29.
