Washington Commanders Turn Page for 2023

Washington Commanders Turn Page for 2023

The Commanders’ current quarterback depth chart reads Sam Howell, Jacoby Brissett, and Jake Fromm. It’s downright shocking that Washington wasn’t in the running for Lamar Jackson. Still, Commanders fans have something to celebrate this year, as owner Dan Snyder is finally selling the team. Snyder’s reign of error was among the worst in NFL odds history. Snyder failed in every way imaginable. Of great concern to owners was the government investigations into his franchise. Such investigations have a way of spreading to places owners don’t want to go.

The Commanders will play on Thanksgiving Day in Dallas for the fifth time in eight online betting seasons. Correlate that their 2016 game on Thanksgiving was FOX’s most-watched game ever to that point. But for the second consecutive season, Washington’s bye isn’t until December.

At the onset, Washington will open the season at home vs. Arizona with a new owner. Dan Snyder is selling the franchise and a new quarterback. Whether it’s Sam Howell or Jacoby Brissett, it’ll be the sixth year in a row the franchise has started a new quarterback. Although the buzz could center around the likely new ownership group. Also, it’ll be the debut of new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. With Arizona’s Kyler Murray recovering from a torn ACL, former Washington quarterback Colt McCoy may start against his former team.

2023 Washington Commanders Offseason Moves

Correlate in the offseason, the Commanders added a decent starting tackle in Andrew Wylie during free agency. And they had an upgrade at quarterback in Jacoby Brissett. They immediately filled their NFL betting odds need at cornerback in the draft. To show, Washington took Emmanuel Forbes and Jartavius Martin. Forbes put up an 87.2 PFF grade in 2022 and racked up 14 interceptions and 17 pass breakups in his college career.

Yet another need, the offensive line, was filled by Braeden Daniels and Ricky Stromberg. Daniels may start immediately, considering the Commanders’ offensive line struggles in 2022 (24th-ranked unit in PFF pass-blocking grade).

Since Danny Boy Snyder took ownership of the franchise in 1999, Washington has posted just six playoff appearances. Their last four postseason bids were wild card losses. During his reign of error, Washington hasn’t been close to being a bona fide Super Bowl contender.
