At the onset, the Falcons are heading into 2023 with Desmond Ridder as their starting quarterback. Following his NFL odds record of going 2-2 in four starts in his rookie season. In those four games, Ridder averaged just 177 passing yards per outing. The Falcons signed elite safety Jessie Bates III. Consider their 2022 safeties being ranked 26th in defensive grade. So this is a much-needed upgrade. Atlanta went with a platoon approach in the front seven. With the easiest strength of schedule in the NFL, the Falcons might have received even more help. Provided Bryce Young starts his first game for the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, Atlanta likely won’t face a quarterback entering the online betting season with multiple NFL starts in his career until Week 3. Specifically, that is in their road opener against the Detroit Lions and Jared Goff. The Falcons host Jordan Love and Green Bay in Week 2. For a defense making a coordinator change with many new personnel, that’s a good way to break in Ryan Nielsen’s group.
In turn, the Falcons choose not to have a bye after going to London. Instead, they are getting a home game against Houston on Oct. 8. And then Atlanta gets a bye during Week 11. Certainly, that bye comes at a better time in the season for the Falcons. By contrast, there is a tough pair of two-game swings. First comes weeks 3 and 4 against the Lions and in London against Jacksonville. And then on Nov. 26 and Dec. 3, when Atlanta faces rival New Orleans at home, followed by facing the Jets on Dec. 3.
