The Carolina Hurricanes finished just over .500 last season but overall it was a disappointing year and it was a real bust for hockey fans that backed the Hurricanes. Carolina was 34-48 against the hockey betting odds last season. Those that bet on hockey know that Carolina went from a Stanley Cup Champion to a team that didn’t even make the playoffs.

Hockey fans know that the Hurricanes did pick up center Matt Cullen from the Rangers in the off-season and he should immediately help. Hockey fans believe that the Hurricanes need goalie Cam Ward to play up to his ability if they are to improve this season. If he does not play well the Hurricanes may turn the goaltending over to Michael Leighton who they got from Montreal.

Hockey fans know that the Hurricanes lost a few players in the off-season but may be better off without all of them. They lost Anson Carter, Andrew Hutchinson, David Tanabe and Josef Vasicek. Those that bet on hockey know that the Hurricanes will look for better production from the players they have and will hope to stay healthy in 2007. The Hurricanes had only one defenseman appear in more than 68 games last season. Hockey fans know that the Canes’ top winger, Cory Stillman missed half the season with injuries.

Hockey fans know that the key for Carolina is to get Cam Ward to play better. He slipped a lot last year, falling all the way out of the Top 30 in goalie stats. Those that bet on hockey know that is not going to get in done in the NHL. Hockey  fans know that the Hurricanes also need to give him some help on the blue line. Other than Commodore there was not much support. Tim Gleason at least has potential but the rest of the blueliners look weak. Hockey betting fans know that Glen Wesley is old and injured. Frantisek Kaberle and Niclas Wallin can both play a lot better and Bret Hedican has never lived up to his ability.

Hockey fans think that Carolina is a team full of a lot of solid players but when they are not playing up to their potential things don’t go well. Hockey betting fans believe that the Hurricanes have to get everything clicking to win and last year it didn’t happen. Those that bet on hockey know that having Eric Staal sure helps and Rod Brind’Amour always plays with heart. The team needs Ray Whitney to play every night and more depth is needed.
