Bookmaker – Florida Wastes No Time and Hires Muschamp. The news last week at the bookmaker had Florida head coach Urban Meyer stepping down after a disappointing season. It didn’t take the Gators long to find a replacement as they hired Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. Meyer will still coach the bowl game though and the Gators are favored at the bookie in the Outback Bowl against Penn State in their New Year’s Day game.
Muschamp Got Tired of Waiting
The Texas Longhorns got blindsided by Florida hiring their defensive coordinator. Muschamp was expected to replace Mack Brown at Texas when he retired. There is no question that Muschamp got tired of waiting for that day to come. Muschamp is expected to get a six-year deal with Florida. He is no stranger to the SEC. He spent a lot of time in Gainesville growing up and he graduated from Georgia. He also coached at Auburn and at LSU. Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley said that Muschamp was his top choice after Meyer resigned.
Poor Timing
The Gators announced the hiring of Muschamp on Saturday at about the same time that the Heisman Trophy winner was announced. They may have been trying to take a little luster off Cam Newton winning he award since he left Florida a couple of years ago.
Meyer Supports Muschamp
Urban Meyer has said that the hiring of Muschamp is a great move. He is fully behind his replacement. Muschamp could be coming in at a good time since the Gators were a disappointing 7-5 this season. Florida was just 6-6 against the college football odds at the Sbg global sportsbook this season. The Gators really struggled on offense and they were blown out in college football odds at the bookmaker by Alabama, South Carolina and Florida State. It was the most losses ever for an Urban Meyer coached team. Muschamp will be expected to turn things around. He had been known for his great defenses at Texas but not this year. Texas was 51st in the country after being 12th last year and the Longhorns were not a team that gamblers had success with at the bookie. Texas had their first losing season in 13 years so it might have been a good time for Muschamp to get out.
