Three of the top two favorites at the bookmaker rolled into the quarterfinals at Wimbledon as Roger Federer, Serena and Venus Williams all won in straight sets on Monday. Federer had no trouble in his win vs. the online bookmaker odds as he dominated 16th-seeded Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. Venus Williams had a little more trouble but got past Jarmila Groth 6-4, 7-6 while top seed Serena Williams played a very tough match against Maria Sharpova but won in straight sets.
Bookmaker odds favor Federer on the men’s side while Venus Williams is the second choice behind sister Serena on the women’s side. Federer has now made the quarterfinals at 25 straight Grand Slam tournaments. Federer nearly lost in the first round but he looked very impressive in the win over Melzer to make the quarterfinals. Federer will face 12th seed Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals and if he gets past that match he would probably face either Novak Djokovic or Andy Roddick in the semifinals. Rafael Nadal or possibly Andy Murray would likely await in the final.
Venus Williams is the second seed behind her sister Serena and if things stay on form the sisters would meet in the final on Saturday. Venus will be playing in her 31st Grand Slam quarterfinal. The road for both sisters has not been easy so a Williams’ final is not a given. Serena was able to get past 2004 champion Maria Sharapova in two tough sets. Kim Clijsters is still in the picture as she beat Justine Henin 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals. Clijsters will play Vera Zvonareva in the quarterfinals. Zvonareva got the win against Jelena Jankovic when Jankovic retired in the second set. Another upset occurred when third-seeded Caroline Wozniacki lost 6-2, 6-0 to unseeded Czech Petra Kvitova.
The picture has become pretty clear on the women’s side with Serena looking to have a pretty easy path to the final vs. the bookmaker tennis odds. She meets Na Li in the quarterfinals and then will play an unseeded player in the semis. The other half of the draw looks to be all about Venus going up against Clijsters in the semis if both players win their quarterfinal matches vs. the online bookmaker tennis odds as expected.
