Cain Velasquez destroyed Brock Lesnar in UFC 121 in a minor upset at the bookmaker. Lesnar was the defending heavyweight champ and a slight favorite at the bookie but it was Velasquez who pounded on Lesnar and ended the fight in the first round.
Lesnar began the fight against Velasquez in good form as he went right at the challenger but it didn’t last long and Velasquez took a strong position and began pummeling Lesnar. The champ simply could not defend against the barrage of punches that Velasquez rained down on him and the fight was stopped just over 4 minutes into the first round.
Shields Wins Split Decision
In a highly anticipated fight at the bookie it was Jake Shields making a successful UFC debut with a split decision win over Martin Kampmann. Many fans were wondering how the former Strikeforce champion would do in the UFC and Shields did not disappoint. He was the better fighter on the ground and he survived on his feet. The scoring was a little weird as one judge had it 30-27 for Shields, another saw it 29-28 for Shields and the third judge had it 29-28 for Kampmann. What the last judge saw is really unclear as the only round that could have gone to Kampmann was the final one. Shields really controlled the first two rounds. Shields have now won 15 straight fights and he could be in line for a shot at Georges St. Pierre.
Diego Sanchez Wins vs. Paulo Thiago
Another of the main event bouts went the distance but it was not close as Diego Sanchez dominated Paulo Thiago. The only question in this fight is whether or not Thiago would survive. Sanchez simply pummeled Thiago throughout the bookmaker fight and the bout was nearly stopped in the third round.
Hamill Dominates Ortiz
Matt Hamill completely dominated Tito Ortiz in another of the main event bouts in UFC 121. This one was completely one-sided as Hamill won a unanimous decision.
Schaub Overwhelms Gonzaga
In the other main event bout it was Brendan Schaub winning a unanimous decision over Gabriel Gonzaga in a bout that was not remotely competitive as Schaub completely overwhelmed Gonzaga in every phase.
