Even though it sounds bad that the Padres would trade away their best hitter in Gonzalez it would be a pretty good deal for San Diego. They would lose Gonzalez after next season because he would become a free agent. Instead of getting nothing for him, the Padres would get three of the best prospects in the Boston system. They would get pitcher Casey Kelly, first baseman Anthony Rizzo and outfielder Reymond Fuentes. Kelly is the top prospect in the Boston system but it may be a while before he makes an impact in the Major Leagues. Rizzo was the third rated prospect in the Boston system while Fuentes was also a player in the top 10 in Boston’s minor leagues.
Gonazlez’ Numbers
The Red Sox would get a great player in Adrian Gonzalez. Last season he hit .298 with 31 home runs and 101 RBIs and that was in a pitcher friendly park in San Diego. He was fifth in the National League in on-base percentage (.393), ninth in slugging (.511). He has won two Gold Gloves in his first five full seasons playing first base. In his five seasons with the Padres, Gonzalez hit 161 home runs and had 501 RBIs.
Padres Set for a Big Fall
