Professional football is a very physical and a very rough game riddles with potential injuries for players and fans that like to place online wagers on NFL games this truth better than anyone.
Just one week into the 2010 NFL season there have already been a handful of injuries to key players across the league. In many instances the injuries are far from major but will hinder the performance of some of the franchises’ star players.
In other cases the extent of the injuries are quite severe and will end the seasons of at least two very important players.
The two clubs hit the hardest from the injuries sustained in Week 1 of the NFL online wagering season are the Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets. And these injuries are of even more consequence for fans that place online wagers on the NFL action as these are two of the preseason favorites to reach the Super Bowl.
During an impressive win of the Philadelphia Eagles in Philly, the Packers lost star running back Ryan Grant for the game when he hobbled out of the action. It now appears that he’ll be lost for the season with a screwed up ankle. This is a major loss for one of the league’s best offenses (379.1 yards per game in ’09). Grant was the team’s workhorse in the running department and is coming off a career year (1,253 yards, 11 TDs). He will be sorely missed and the Packers will have a tough time replacing him as the team is extremely thin at the RB position.
The Jets are the other team that received disappointing and potentially season altering injury news on Tuesday. DT Kris Jenkins, one of the best in the game and the lynch pin inside for the NFL’s best defense last season (14.8 points per game) will be out for the remainder of the season.
There was a spate of other injuries in the Week 1 NFL online wager action as well but none were as significant or as permanent as the two aforementioned maladies.
The Packers and the Jets are still two very good teams but their chances of making it to the Super Bowl just took major hits with the loss of Grant and Jenkins, respectively.
