Full Field Likely in Preakness Stakes Odds

A full field of 14 horses in Preakness Stakes odds is very likely on Saturday. There was a chance that 15 horses could be entered but the Preakness is limited to 14 horses which would mean one horse would be left out.  Preakness Stakes betting will have Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver as the favorite in this large field.

Preakness Stakes odds will list a number of longshots in this race.  It is possible only a couple of horses will go off at single-digit odds. Those two horses are likely to be Super Saver and Lookin at Lucky.  Other likely starters in the Preakness are Paddy O’Prado, Dublin, Aikenite, Jackson Bend, Hurricane Ike, Caracortado, Pleasant Prince, Yawanna Twist, Schoolyard Dreams, Northern Giant and First Dude.  Mission Impazible is also a possibility.

On paper, Preakness Stakes betting should come down to just two horses.  Lookin at Lucky has the best resume with three grade-one wins and two grade two wins. Super Saver has one grade-one win and one grade-two victory. Dublin has one win in a grade one race.  Caracortado won a grade-two race. Hurricane Ike has a grade-three win and Paddy O’Prado has a grade-three win on the turf. Aikenite, Pleasant Prince, Northern Giant and First Dude have only won one race. A Little Warm won a race at Gulfstream Park. Ywanna Twist and Schoolyard Dreams have won two races but neither was anything special.  If Jackson Bend is entered as expected he could be a threat in Preakness Stakes odds. He has won four stakes races but he was a very disappointing 12th in the Kentucky Derby.

With 14 horses in the Preakness on Saturday it could be important for a horse to get a good trip.  The Preakness is shorter than the Kentucky Derby so horses don’t have long to recover from a bad start. Pimlico can be a speed favoring track so that is also something to remember. The horse that wins in Preakness betting will normally stalk the leader and win from just off the lead. That is a good style for Super Saver and he should have a chance to win again on Saturday.  The Preakness could have some big payouts if Super Saver doesn’t finish in the money.  He is expected to at least have a chance to win and if he doesn’t finish in the top three then some big numbers are possible.
