Preakness Stakes betting could include Hurricane Ike who won the Derby Trial. The horse did not have enough earnings to make the Derby but he could be a factor in Preakness Stakes odds. Preakness Stakes betting won’t favor Hurricane Ice but that does not mean he can’t win. He is likely to have jockey Calvin Borel who won last year’s race aboard Rachel Alexandra. Borel was red hot on the day of the Derby Trial, winning five races including the Derby Trial aboard Hurricane Ike. In the Derby Trial, Hurricane Ike won by almost three lengths over Aikenite. Pleasant Prince and Eightyfiveinafifty were third and fourth.
The win by Hurricane Ike in the Trial was the second win in eight starts for the horse. Trainer John Sadler said the horse could be pointed toward Preakness Stakes betting. In the Derby Trial, Hurricane Ike ran 1:36.35 and paid $13.80 as the fourth choice. The horse is owned by Ike and Dawn Thrash. The owners also have Line of David who ran in the Kentucky Derby.
One of the more popular jockeys at Churchill Downs is Calvin Borel. He will also get some attention at Pimlico. Winning from the rail is not always easy at Pimlico so Borel may have to win with another strategy in the Preakness if he is aboard Hurricane Ike. “I loved him the first time I rode him,” said Borel, “I begged the next time he ran to let me ride him and give me one more shot. He’s a nice little horse. He tries. He’s a gutsy little horse. To my knowledge the colt’s just coming around; a late developer.”
Hurricane Ike was bred in Florida by Stanley Boileau. He is out of the Future Storm mare Parental Uproar. He is trained by John Sadler. “We were hoping he’d like the track,” Sadler said. “We don’t have that much experience with off tracks in California, especially real sloppy tracks. So we were hoping that he’d like the going, and he seemed to be traveling well early. I told (Borel), ‘you know more about this place than I do.’ I figured I was in good hands.
Sadler was considering the options for the horse including Preakness Stakes odds. “The Preakness is an option or we might take him to the Dwyer in a couple of weeks. We’ll probably look at something back (East) in the short term.”
